Wormphlegm was a band from Finland formed as a duo in 2000 by two members who played in Tyranny. The band played a special kind of funeral doom metal mixed with black metal elements that has been described as slow, monotonic, featuring crushing guitar work and ritualistic, almost trancelike, drumming. It also features occasional serene, near-melodic guitar parts. They have been rumored to self-harm whilst recording vocals in order to achieve a authentic pained vocal performance. The group disbanded in 2006 after the release of their only full-length album Tomb of the Ancient King in July of the same year.

History[]

The band was founded in 2000 and was considered a first project by Tyranny members Lauri Lindqvist and Matti Mäkelä, which they initiated together using various pseudonyms. In 2001 the project released the demo volume titled In an Excruciating Way Infested with Vermin and Violated by Executioners Who Practice Incendiarism and Desanctifying the Pious as a one-track music cassette. It was limited to 100 copies, and was soon supplemented by an unofficial CD-R version under the same title and was re-released several years later as a long-playing record. In 2006, Tomb of the Ancient King was released on Painiac Records, and was limited to 500 copies. In the same year, the musicians ended the project. Both releases were positively received for their publication and subsequently acquired a reputation as an important classic of funeral doom. After its release, the band decided to dissolve.
