Workshed are a doom metal/crust punk band formed in Harrogate, England. Notably the core members are Adam Lehan and Mark Wharton, both of whom played together with Acid Reign and Cathedral up until about 1994. Forming in 2014 after getting back in touch, the duo would work with Rise Above Records to release an album nearly five years after forming.

Workshed's sound has been described as doom metal, sludge metal and experimental metal.[1] The band cites influences the likes of Motörhead, Amebix, Type O Negative, The Obsessed and Trouble among others[2] while the hype sticker for their debut album recommends them to fans of Celtic Frost, early Entombed and early Cathedral.[3]

History[]

Nearly three decades prior to forming Workshed, Lehan and Wharton had both played in Harrogate thrash metal band Acid Reign together in the 1980s. Eventually, the two would find themselves in doom metal band Cathedral, Lehan joining first as one of the band's founding members in 1989, with Wharton joining in 1992 and notably appearing on The Ethereal Mirror. However by the time 1994's Statik Majik saw release both Wharton and Lehan had left the band.[4] Wharton would join Asomvel and play drums for the solo project of Cronos of Venom notoriety while Lehan would keep busy with outher projects.

Roughly twenty years after leaving Cathedral, Lehan had approached Wharton with a number of guitar riffs he had written, leading to them beginning to write music together once again. After some time, the pair approached former-Cathedral vocalist Lee Dorrian, who agreed to release their album through his label Rise Above Records. Drawing from years of anxiety and depression, Lehan and Wharton composed an album's worth of songs, working with esteemed producer Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios.[5] Workshed would be announced as a new signed act to Rise Above in July 2019, with a release date for their debut album set for September. On 30 August Decibel Magazine would premiere "Safety Behaviours",[6] with the eponymous Workshed following on 13 September to positive reviews.

Roughly two weeks after the release of the album Workshed would announce that they had recruited a bassist in Helen Storer on 26 September,[7] with plans of performing intended for 2020.[8] On 8 October 2021 it would be announced that Scott Naylor (Iron Void, Reign of Erebus) would join the band as the new drummer.[9] The next year, Jonathan "Sealey" Seale would also join on bass.

By 2023, Workshed had deleted their socials and essentially disbanded.
