Working With God is a studio album by Melvins 1983, set for a February 2021. Notably with the band's prior album Pinkus Abortion Technician being released on 20 April 2018, Working With God would mark the longest gap between Melvins albums at nearly three years. It's also the first recordings to feature the Melvins 1983 lineup since 2016's Beer Hippy EP, later released on Basses Loaded and the second Melvins 1983 album overall, following 2013's Tres Cabrones.
Background[]
In the Summer of 2020 Melvins would release new material by the Melvins 1983 lineup in the form of the EP Mullet. On 13 November 2020 details on a new album would be announced, along with pre-orders for digital, CD, Black Vinyl, Silver Vinyl (2000 copies) and Custard Vinyl (500 copies). The album would notably be recorded in two sessions as Dillard lived in Washington state and maintains a union job, making lengthy sessions difficult.[1] "I Fuck Around" and "Bouncing Rick" would be premiered on Ipecac Records' YouTube, the former a parody of the Beach Boys' classic hit "I Get Around". An earlier version of "Hot Fish" appeared on the EP Hot Fish, which featured Melvins in collaboration with Flipper. Lastly, the closing cover of "Goodnight Sweet Heart" had been previously performed by the band as far back as 2011.[2]
On 11 February 2021 Ipecac would upload the song "1 Fuck You", a cover of the Harry Nilsson song "You're Breakin' My Heart".[3]
In an interview with Dale Crover via The Big Takeover, he would confirm that recording took place in the Spring of 2020 right as the pandemic had begun, with Mike Dillard quickly recording his parts before returning to Montesano.[4] The album was originally intended for a November 2020 release.
