Wolf's Return is the third album by the Swedish metal band Grand Magus. Recorded through the Winter of 2005, it would be released in the Summer of 2005 via Rise Above Records to critical acclaim. Notably, the band's sound would fully shift to heavy metal, with only subtle doom elements through.
Notably, Wolf's Return would be the last album to feature original drummer Fredrik "Trisse" Liefvendahl. Following the Doomed Trinity tour in the Winter of 2006, on 23 March 2006 it would be announced that drummer Liefvendahl would amicably depart from the band, later joining Abramis Brama.[1] Sebastian "Seb" Sippola would be announced as the band's new drummer that next month.[2]
Background[]
Work would begin on Grand Magus' third album in January 2005, with the title unveiled on 21 February 2005.[3] Details on the album would surface, leading up to the release of Wolf's Return on 14 June 2005 on both CD and Vinyl. Candlelight Records USA would handle the North American distribution (As The Music Cartel would fold in 2004.). JVC Victor would also release the album in 2005, with a live version of "Brotherhood of Sleep" as a bonus track. A music video would be released for "Kingslayer".
Wolf's Return would attain positive reception, with many reviewers noting the shift to a heavy metal sound. Blabbermouth, awarding an 8/10 score, would state the following: "No matter how you may have applied the term "doom" to the debut album or "Monument", all you really need to know is that "Wolf's Return" is a heavy metal album with captivating melodies that happens to contain a substantial doom influence. The results are impressive.".[4] Yves Dub, writing for Sea of Tranquility and awarding Four Stars, praising the balance between heavy and melodic.[5] Two reviews for Metal Crypt would rate the album 4.75/5, both eliciting high praise for the album as a whole.[6][7]
Other notable reviews would come from the likes of Digital Metal,[8] Royal Carnage,[9] Rebel Extravaganza,[10] Maximum Metal,[11] MetalRage[12] and Daredevil Magazine among others.[13] Wolf's Return would rank #10 on Stonerrock.com's Top 25 Albums of 2005.[14]
