Witchcryer are a traditional doom band based out of Austin, Texas. Founded in 2015 by Earthen Grave guitarist Jason Muxlow, Witchcryer's sound is heavily influenced by old-school heavy and doom metal, in particular Black Sabbath and Witchfinder General.[1] Signing to Ripple Music, Witchcryer would release two albums to date, with a third on the way.

History[]

Witchcryer would be founded in 2015 when Jason Muxlow has moved from Chicago to Austin, Texas that January. By June he would find the remaining members for the band: Drummer Javi Moctezuma, Vocalist Suzy Bravo and bassist Marilyn.[2] Following the release of a three-song demo in The Preying Kind on 2 February 2016, Witchcryer would perform live for the first time on 7 April with Cursus and Cosmic Behemoth.[3] Following further shows with the likes of Mothership, Speedealer, Ladykiller, Savage Master and Castle among others, the band begin work on a debut album.

Cry Witch would be released independently on 12 May 2017,[4] in time for a tour of SXSW and a tour with the Italian doom metal band Messa.[5] Cry Witch would garner praise from several critics[6] and in turn Ripple Music would sign the band for a re-release of the album in early 2018.[7]

Over the next several years, Witchcryer would perform at numerous festivals and all-dayers, along with supporting numerous touring acts. A second album would be recorded with producer Brett Sankey. When Their Gods Come For You would see release on 20 August 2021 to positive reception, followed by several shows to support the record.[8]

On 9 March the band would announce that, following an appearance at Stoner Jam and an Easter Sunday gig as direct support for Lydia Lunch's Retrovirus, that Witchcryer would be taking an indefinite hiatus. The band has proposed a third album in the works.[9]
