Warning are a doom metal band formed in Essex, England. Founded in 1994 by Patrick Walker, Warning concocted traditional doom with added elements of down-tempo, progressive and melodic rock, complimented by Walker's poignant vocals and introspective, darkly-confessional themes. In their first run, the band would release two demos and a studio album in The Strength to Dream before going on hiatus.
Warning would re-form in 2005 and work on a new album, culminating in 2006's Watching from a Distance which would be cited as a classic in modern heavy music. Following touring, Warning would disband in 2009, eventually re-forming in 2016 as a quartet to present their second album in a world tour.
History[]
Inaugural Run and The Strength to Dream (1994 - 2001)[]
Warning initially formed in 1994 by the founding lineup of Patrick Walker, John Sellings and Stuart Springthorpe. The band released two demo tapes, Revelation Looms in Feb 1996 and Blessed By Sabbath in March 1997 which led them to gain underground metal press attention and label interest. The band at one point was approached by Rise Above Records to release a debut album. However Warning declined, allegedly due to the label's "stoner" direction at the time and on acrimonoius terms.[1]
Signing to Rich Walker's British doom label The Miskatonic Foundation, Warning would release The Strength to Dream circa December 1999. Reviews at the time were fairly positive and retroactively attained further praise.[2][3] After two tours (one of the United Kingdom with Solstice and one of Europe with Jack Frost), mainman Patrick Walker put the band into hibernation.
First Reunion and Watching from A Distance (2005 - 2009)[]
Warning would re-form in 2005 with Walker, Springthorpe and Marcus Hatfield to make a special appearance at Doom Shall Rise. Following a Winter Finland tour in 2006 with Reverend Bizarre and a UK tour with The Gates of Slumber, Warning would work on a second studio album. Watching from a Distance would see release circa December 2006, attaining critical praise both at the time[4][5] and retroactively.[6][7] Kerrang would comprise a list entitled "The Top 13 Bleakest Rock and Metal Albums Ever" to which Watching From A Distance would take the #1 spot.[8]
Warning would largely tour through the UK and Europe over the next two years with several doom bands but would disband a second time in January 2009, with Walker writing and recording for 40 Watt Sun among solo material. A posthumous EP entitled Bridges saw release circa 9 April 2010, featuring unreleased live and acoustic renditions of the song.
Second Reunion (2016 - Present)[]
In late 2016 it would be announced that Warning would re-form at the 2017 edition of Roadburn Festival, performing the entirety of Watching from a Distance. A vinyl box set would be released via Svart Records to support the reunion tour. Along with Walker would be longtime bassist Marcus Hatfield, prior bassist Wayne Taylor as a second guitarist and drummer Andrew Prestidge.
Along with the Roadburn appearance Warning would appear at Psycho Las Vegas in the band's first appearance in the United States, an appearance at Blowup in Finland and a North American tour surrounding an appearance at Days of Darkness, with support from the likes of Ouroboros Worm, Thou and The Body. Following closing out the year appearing at Hammer of Doom Festival, The band also performed the next year at DesertFest London and Hellfest. The band also confirmed that these shows would be the only live performances in regards to a reunion.[9]
