W is a studio album by the Japanese experimental band Boris. Released in the Winter of 2022, it would be released via Kilikilivilla in Japan, whom the band worked with in 2021 for Reincarnation Rose. Internationally it would be the band's debut on Sacred Bones Records.[1] Notably, it is the second Boris album where Wata handles all of the vocals after 2011's Attention Please. Tokie (Ace Of Spades, Norma Jean, Unkle, etc.) joins the band as a guest bassist and suGar Yoshinaga (Buffalo Daughter) handles the production.

Background[]

Work would begin on W in 2021 around the same time that Boris would work on Reincarnation Rose, collaborating with Tokie and suGar Yoshinaga and promoting the Hizumitas Pedal.[2] On 30 November 2021 a teaser announcement would be made,[3] followed by the full announcement circa 9AM EST.[4] W would be released in Japan via Kilikilivilla on CD while internationally it would be released via Sacred Bones Records on CD, Cassette, Vinyl and Digital.

Sacred Bones would note that the opening track, "I Want to Go to the Side Where You Can Touch…", shares the same melody as "Interlude" from the 2020 album NO, making W the follow-up and can be perceived as a two-part effort to compose "NOW". W's sound however is a major contrast to the heavy metal themes of NO, leaning more into electronic and experimental sounds, with Wata singing on every track.[5]
