Volume 4: Hard Walls and Little Trips is the fourth extended play by The Desert Sessions. Recorded in June 1998 at Monkey Studios, it was released by Man's Ruin Records as a 10" EP on 22 September 1998. The album features twelve credited musicians, including Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Mario Lalli. It was later re-released with Volume 3: Set Coordinates For The White Dwarf!!! as Volumes 3 & 4.

The fourth Desert Sessions EP was recorded in sessions between 23 and 26 June 1998 at Monkey Studios in Palm Springs, California. The sessions were produced by Josh Homme, engineered and mixed by Homme and Steve Feldman, and featured a total of twelve credited musicians. In similar fashion to Volume 3, Volume 4 features two different bands. The Eagles of Death Metal would be a collective project featuring Homme, Jesse Hughes, Loo Balls, Craig Armstrong and T. Fresh. The first recordings of this project, Eagles of Death Metal would go on to become a full band by the early 2000s, releasing their first album in 2004.[1]

The Green Monarchs would be a collective project featuring Homme, Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Mondo Generator, etc.), Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), Alfredo Hernández (Across The River, Yawning Man, etc.) and all three core members of Fatso Jetson (Mario Lalli, Larry Lalli and Tony Tornay). Along with a cover of The Groundhogs' "Eccentric Man", the recordings of this one-off collective features two originals. "Monster in the Parasol" would go on to appear on the Queens of the Stone Age album Rated R. Notably Mondo Generator would also perform "Jr. High Love" live on occasion.
