Violence From The Vault (Previously known as Paintime Grit)[1] is a demo by Buzzov*en. Considered to be an extended play or mini-album, this archival release comprises five demos recorded in late 1994 and intended for a second album to record with Roadrunner Records, which ultimately never happened due to the band's dismissal from the label. In an interview with Exclaim!, Kirk Fisher would state that not long after recording the lineup would shift towards what would be the At a Loss... lineup and chose to pursue new recordings with that lineup.[2]
The demos would surface online for years and a few tracks would appear on other releases be it the original demo tracks or re-recordings. A portion of "Nod" appears on Another Day in the Lost Lives of..., a split with Sourvein released in 1996. "Mainline" would be re-recorded for The Gospel According... II, released in 1997. "I Don't Need" and "Wifebeater" were recorded in the same sessions and appear on a split with God and Texas released in 1995, though would be omitted from this archival release.
Violence From The Vault garnered mostly positive reception. Exclaim! would cite it as "Beautifully obtuse and indelibly esoteric".[3] while AllMusic would award a 3.5/5, though citing "Nod" as "borders on never-ending sonic torture".[4] Stormbringer zine and Hellbound.ca would both award a 6/10, critical of the rawness and unbalanced length.[5][6]
Noisecreep would also award "album art of the week" to Violence From The Vault, whose art was done by recurring Relapse Records contributor Orion Landau.[7]
