Upsidedown Cross was a doom/sludge metal band originating from Boston, Massachusetts, initially active between 1989 and 2002, with a short-lived reunion in 2011. Kilslug vocalist Larry Lifeless would be the sole constant member around a constant rotating group of musicians in the Boston heavy metal and grindcore scene.

Upsidedown Cross would release two albums in their lifetime, along with two other releases.

History[]

Upsidedown Cross would form in 1989 by Larry Lifeless after his sludge/punk/noise outfit Kilslug would break up. Opting for a sludge/doom metal sound ala early Eyehategod or Winter, a quintet quickly formed. The band opted to sign to Kilslug's previous label Taang! Records, to which the label would sign them after some convincing as allegedly the label thought they were "too weird". The band's lyrical themes would be themed in ridiculing society and political incorrectness, something fairly common with the Boston scene at the time.

The band would notably recruit J.Mascis (Dinosaur Jr., Witch) on drums for their eponymous debut, released in 1991. Two years later a follow-up album in Evilution saw release. Info on shows, possible touring and details beyond physical releases are scarce at best. 1997 would see the release of an EP entitled Witchcraft and 2002 would see a split release with the Cleveland noise/sludge band Sloth before breaking up that same year. Lifeless would form Adolf Satan with Josh Martin (Anal Cunt), Seth Putnam (Anal Cunt) and Nick Camillieri (Kevorkian's Angels, You're Fired). The band also recorded a third album in 1998 entitled Hate but was never properly released.

Upsidedown Cross would reunite in 2011 as a sludge duo with Lifeless on guitar and vocals alongside Seth Putnam (Anal Cunt, Angry Hate, Impaled Northern Moonforest) on drums. The band would perform a handful of shows with Full Blown AIDS.[1] However this reunion would be short-lived as Seth Putnam would die on 11 June 2011 from heart failure. Lifeless would eventually reunite Kilslug and ultimately pass away himself in 2021.
