Under are an experimental sludge trio based out of Stockport, England. Forming in 2015 they are notably one of the first bands to sign with APF Records, with 2017's Slick being the label's first release. While the band has a nucleus in doom and sludge the band tends to work in unorthodox time signatures and elements of psych, prog and avant-garde.
To date Under have released two albums (both of which via APF Records) and have performed with a wide arrangement of musical acts in the UK scene.
History[]
Under would get their start sometime in 2015, releasing a three-song EP in First Attempt circa 10 June 2015. The band's earliest known live performance (And first headlining performance) too place on 1 August at The Zombie Shack.[1] Under would participate in several all-dayer gigs early on, sharing the stage with a wide range of heavy acts such as Alunah, Lacertilia, Groan, Ohhms,[2] Camel of Doom,[3] Elephant Tree, PIST, Boss Keloid,[4] Barbarian Hermit,[5] Mars Red Sky[6] and Esoteric[7] just to name a few.
By late 2016 and early 2017 the band would begin work on a debut album, recording at Spirit Studio in Manchester with producer Simon Mayo, along with finding a label to distribute the album. Slick would see release on 31 May 2017, the first release on APF Records. A secret release show would take place on 2 June with Lauren Young, Mask of Bees and Kurokuma.[8] Under would play several shows in support of Slick while quickly working on a follow-up.
Recording with Rian Gamble A second album would come sixteen months later in Stop Being Naive, circa 26 October 2018 to positive reviews. In support of "Stop Being Naive", Under would perform through various parts of England, sharing the stage with the likes of Whores.,[9] Yawning Man,[10] Bismuth, Primitive Man and Mondo Generator among others. The band would also participate in the 2019 edition of Riff Fest and the third annual APF Records Showcase. Work would begin on a third album but would be halted due to the CO-VID19 Pandemic, which also canceled appearances at Desertfest London and Stonebaked Festival.
