Thunderchief is a 2-piece doom/drone/sludge band originating from Richmond, Virginia. Active since roughly 2006, this doom project consists of Rik Surly and drummer Erik Larson (2017), drawing influences from the likes of Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Iron Monkey, Sleep, Sunn O))) and Zeni Geva among others.

Early on, THUNDERCHIEF was billed as "A 1-Man Drone/Doom/Stoner/Sludge/Noise Nightmare", Surly was also the sole performer on the live stage surrounded by a wall of amps in similar fashion to the likes of Jucifer or Beast In The Field. To date Thunderchief has toured all over the United States and released a single album amid a host of singles.

History[]

The early years of Thunderchief's history are rather hazy but it is known the project's earliest shows took place in Outer Banks, NC while on an extended surf & skate season. What would follow would be a string of west coast shows with the likes of Negura Bunget, Bog Oak, among others. In 2012 work began on a demo for an upcoming album, debut album, leading to the release of The Tone of Sorrow circa May 2015, with a release party on 3 May in New York City in the historic Williamsburg district.[1] Thunderchief would perform various shows around this time, sharing the stage with the likes of Stonecutters, Apostle of Solitude, Worshipper, Black Tusk, Green Jelly and Author/Punisher among many others.

Thunderchief would tour again in the Spring on 2017 alongside Midmourner, closing out that year sharing the stage with Eyehategod. Alongside touring with Cursus in 2018 a string of singles in "Witchduck" and "Stone House" would be revealed that year, having worked with drummer Erik Larson (Alabama Thunderpussy, Hail!Hornet, Backwoods Payback) on these new songs, also releasing them as limited edition cassingles. Thunderchief would participate in the 2019 event Doom Hawg Day, leading to a summer tour with Witchkiss and an appearance at The Maryland Doom Fest. An unreleased song with Erik Larson saw release in 2019 entitled "Solar Temple", followed by a fall tour with Red Beard Wall entitled Sacrament of The Ninth Order.

On 5 April 2020 it would be announced that Thunderchief would release a new album entitled No Sufferance For Thy Fools, set for a 24 April release.[2]
