Thulsa Doom are a Norwegian stoner rock band. The band was formed in 1999 by guitarist Ole Petter Andreassen (The Cumshots, Black Debbath, El Doom & the Born Electric), who took the stage name El Doom. He was joined by his Black Debbath colleague and bass player Egil Hegerberg (a.k.a. Angelov Doom), as well as singer Papa Doom, guitarist Doom Perignon and drummer Fast Winston Doom. Their music is inspired by Kyuss and early Black Sabbath.
Thulsa Doom would largely tour Norway though occasionally perform in various other countries in Europe.
Their name comes from the Robert E. Howard character Thulsa Doom, portrayed by James Earl Jones as the main antagonist in the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian. The band also shared the name with a New York hardcore punk band with the same name that existed from 1998 – 2000.
History[]
The band was formed in 1999 by guitarist Ole Petter Andreassen (also a member of The Cumshots and Black Debbath), under the stage name El Doom. He was joined by his Black Debbath colleague, bass player Egil Hegerberg, using the name Angelov Doom, as well as singer Papa Doom, guitarist Doom Perignon and drummer Fast Winston Doom. Not long after forming the band would release their debut EP She Fucks Me! in 2000, the album cover depicting former U.S. President Bill Clinton throwing the horns.
The band would eventually sign with Big Dipper Records in Europe and This Dark Reign in North America. In the span of five years, Thulsa Doom would release three full-length albums. One of their trademarks is very long and strange album titles.Singer Papa Doom left the band in 2003, and guitarist Doom Perignon is now the band's singer. The band's third album Keyboard, Oh Lord! Why Don't We? is a bit less heavy and more melodic than the previous albums. Their cover version of Beach Boys' "Tears in the Morning" was a minor TV hit in Norway in the summer of 2005 with a video directed by Jarle Medhus.
Thulsa Doom would be inactive from 2006 - 2012, reforming in 2013 with the original lineup, Papa Doom included. The band would eventually sign with Duplex Records for a re-issue campaign and a new studio album in 2017's A Keen Eye For The Obvious. A follow-up would come five years later in Ambition Freedom.
