Throbbing Jazz Gristle Funk Hits is a collaborative album between The Melvins and Void Manes. Recorded in the early 2010s and long speculated since 2014,[1] this album is composed as a tribute to Throbbing Gristle. Along with covers of the legendary experimental act, the album also features re-interpretations in the vein of the band. It will be released in June 2023 via Amphetamine Reptile Records and available on the band's tour with Boris (Twins of Evil).
Background[]
In January 2014 a collaboration between The Melvins and Void Manes was announced to be in the works.[2] Three of the recordings would appear prior in some capacity on the 2013 covers album Everybody Loves Sausages. The project would go largely silent for years until a track was premiered on the Melvins Black & Blue livestream special in November 2022.
On 20 June, Melvins and Amphetamine Reptile Records would announce Throbbing Jazz Gristle Funk Hits, an all-electronic LP that serves as a tribute to Throbbing Gristle. Released in late June, it is a long-awaited and speculated collaboration with Void Manes.[3][4] A music video for "Discipline 23" would also be premiered, directed by Jesse Niminen. While some of the tracks are covers of Throbbing Gristle material, some songs are original compositions and reinterpretations in the vein of Throbbing Gristle.
The album will be released as a Cheapy 5$ CD and as a vinyl edition. The CD would feature twelve songs while the vinyl would be released as a LP with a bonus flexi 7". The two "bonus tracks" on the LP are actually locked grooves that go for six seconds before infinitely repeating. The initial pressings for both formats sold out quickly, with the vinyl selling out in less than five minutes and the CD selling out in less than 24 hours. A second issue of the CDs would be produced while some copies of the vinyl would be available on tour.
No performers are credited on the vinyl or CD but production photos have surfaced showing Osborne, Void Manes and Toshi Kasai as performers. While not explicitly stated, this may be the first Melvins release to not feature Dale Crover since Mangled Demos From 1983 and the solo EPs.
