Thergothon was a Finnish band founded in 1990 and lasted until 1993. The band began its career playing death metal, and then moving towards the slower and funerious times of doom metal, based on slow music consisting of ultra-refined riffs, mid-tempos, chimes of foldable drums, and voice with abysmal and cavernous growl. This made them the pioneers of the funeral doom microgenre. The group disbanded one year before the release of its only album titled Stream from the Heavens.
History[]
Thergothon made their debut in 1991 with the Fhtagn nagh Yog-Sothoth demo, with funeral doom metal sounds. The band in the extreme Finnish underground scene began to be known and appreciated, in fact, following their style in Helsinki and surroundings, other such bands like Skepticism, Pantheist, Shape of Despair and Tyranny will be born. They also inspired Disembowelment and Evoken (in fact the latter take their name from the song of the same name contained in the above-mentioned album).
After the first demo demo, in 1994, three years later, the band's first and only album, Stream from the Heavens, came out. After this album the band broke up.
In 1996, Niko Skorpio (Niko Sirkiä) and Jori Sjöroos formed This Empty Flow, a band that maintains the depressive atmosphere of Thergothon, although more oriented to dark wave.
Musical style[]
The music was very slow with extremely deep guttural vocals, using heavy guitar riffs, very low tuned guitars and low lead guitar melodies. In addition to death metal, the band also incorporated influences from styles like gothic rock, ambient or progressive rock.
In 2010, a Thergothon tribute album titled Rising of Yog-Sothoth: A Tribute to Thergothon was released with contributions from bands such as Worship, Evoken and Asunder.
