The Wolf Bites Back is the ninth studio album by the English heavy metal band Orange Goblin. Produced by Jaime "Gomez" Arellano (Ghost, Paradise Lost, etc.) at Orgone Studios in Bedfordshire, England,[1] The Wolf Bites Back was released on 15 June 2018 by Candlelight Records. Phil Campbell (Motörhead) would appear as a guest on the title track and the album closer "Zeitgeist".[2]
Along with being the shortest album in the band's discography at just forty minutes, it would also be notable as the last studio album to feature founding member and bassist Martyn Millard, who would leave the band in late 2020.
Background[]
Development on the band's ninth album would take place throughout 2017. The album was preceded by the single "Sons of Salem".[3] Singer Ben Ward explained that the album was constructed with live concerts in mind: "There was definitely a concerted effort to make sure all the songs could work in a live environment which gives the album a more raw, stripped-back feel — something that I feel has been lacking from good rock and metal in recent years."[4] The album includes experimentation with doom metal, groove metal, and blues rock.[5] Andy Thorley, writing for Maximum Volume Music, said of the album: "The best thing about [the album] though, is that for all its differences, it still sounds like Orange Goblin, still sounds like the band they always were, and the progression is entirely natural."[6]
Other review sites that have given the album praise would be among the likes of Metal Injection,[7] Blabbermouth,[8] Louder Sound[9] Spectrum Culture[10] and Decibel Magazine[11] among others.
