The Second Coming is the second official studio album by the Japanese doom metal band Church of Misery. Recorded in late 2003 and released in 2004, it is notably the first studio album to feature vocalist Hideki Fukasawa, previously of S.C.U.M. and Bleed For Pain.[1] The album would also notably feature a cover of "One Way... Or Another" by Cactus.
Background[]
Following the release of Church of Misery's debut album Master of Brutality, founding guitarist Tomohiro Nishimura would leave the band, with Takenori Hoshi taking his place for selected tracks on the Boston Strangler EP. In early 2003 vocalist Yoshiaki Negishi would leave. On 25 July the band would announce their new singer in Hideki Fukasawa.[2] Work would begin on The Second Coming in the Fall, recording at the Los Angeles Club (Tokyo, Japan) from November 2003 to March 2004.
Candy Man and El Topo would be re-recorded from Boston Strangler, though the reprise of "I, Motherfucker" at the end would be the same as the EP. "I, Motherfucker" would be recorded into a full song for the album to open The Second Coming. Music videos would also be shot for "Filth Bitch Boogie" and "I, Motherfucker", both appearing on the DVD Houses of the Unholy. Signing to DiwPhalanx Records, The Second Coming would see release on CD circa 9 June 2004, with a release party to follow a month later.[3] The next year French label Salvation Records would release their version of the CD with a different cover and the first vinyl edition of the album in 2006.[4]
In 2011, Rise Above Records would reissue The Second Coming on CD and Vinyl, with bonus tracks (The three songs from the Church of Misery / Sourvein splits and a live rendition of "Red Ripper Blues" from Live at Roadburn 2009) in September 2011 in the following versions:
