The Kings of Frog Island are a stoner/psych rock project from Leicester, England. This project was formed in 2003 with Mat Bethancourt (Josiah, Cherry Choke) collaborating with Mark Buteux and Roger "Dodge" Watson (Scum Pups), the former of the two Scum Pups members also being a producer and engineer. The Kings of Frog Island draw on a collective passion for cult movie soundtracks, mammoth riffs, heavy psych rock and fragile laments to love, life and the eternal sleep. In their early incarnation the trio would collaborate on a trilogy of albums, working with many other musicians as guests: Matthew Day (Scum Pups), Gavin Searle, Julia Dream, Tony Heslop, Lee Madel Toner, Gavin Wright and Gregg Hunt (Cherry Choke & Obscure Ivresse).
This project would be signed to Munich-based label Elektrohasch Schallplatten, releasing The Kings of Frog Island in 2005, II in 2008 and III in 2010, with each album attaining positive reception and slowly gaining this band a name worldwide despite being a studio-only project. However by 2010 Mat Bethancourt would leave the group to concentrate on Cherry Choke.
Now essentially the brainchild project of Mark Buteux, The Kings of Frog Island would release new games digitally via their own label and vinyl editions via Kosmik Artifactz. IV saw release in 2013 with V the next year after. On 21 September 2017 The Kings of Frog Island would perform live for the first time as The Musician in Leicester.[1]
Currently The Kings of Frog Island have released a single in every month of 2019, hinting at a sixth album in the future. By December they had completed this online singles series with thirteen songs, including their own take on "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" and a cover of "Ozium" by Monster Magnet among several original tunes.[2]
