The Grand Mal are a heavy rock/stoner rock band originating from Oxford, England. Forming in 2015 by members of Desert Storm and Mother Corona, The Grand Mal are described by APF Records' page as a band that "leans into grunge, whilst maintaining elements of the sludge, southern and stoner.[1] To date the band has a single album and has largely performed in England.
The band's name stems from a form of epilepsy characterized by tonic-clonic seizures.
History[]
The Grand Mal was formed by Ryan and Elliot Cole (Desert Storm) alongside Rob Glenn and Dave-O (Mother Corona, My Diablo) in early 2015, slowly writing and coming up with their own material. The band's first show would take place at The Cellar on Oxford on 17 February 2016, supporting Swedish rockers Skraeckoedlan and Snowy Dunes.[2] The band would be direct support for OXROX the next night. On 25 February the band would release a three-song EP as their first physical release.[3] The Grand Mal would perform when time allowed it as the members remained active with their other respective bands.
Following a short hiatus The Grand Mal would play again on 15 November 2018 as support for Urne and Armed For Apocalypse.[4] It would be revealed that the band had signed with APF Records and would perform at the second annual APF Records Showcase on 2 February following a string of gigs supporting touring acts.[5] Eponymous debut album The Grand Mal saw release on 18 October 2019[6] to positive reception from the likes of Outlaws of The Sun,[7] Metal Temple,[8] Echoes and Dust[9] and The Sleeping Shaman[10] among others. The band would perform a string of shows in late 2019 along with a mini-tour alongside Battalions and Barbarian Hermit. A tour for the Spring with Desert Storm was planned and would have been their first tour of Europe but ultimately would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Grand Mal covered Alice Cooper's 'Be My Lover' for the 'Killer: 50 Years Later' compilation album, released on Pale Wizard Records on 27 November 2021. Also featuring artists such as Green Lung, Mos Generator, Alunah and Sergeant Thunderhoof, its release date coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the Alice Cooper 'Killer' album. [11] On 15 September 2022 the Grand Mal's second record II was announced for release on 4 November 2022, alongside the release of promo single 'Rule my Soul'. [12]
