The Distortion Field is the eighth studio album by the American doom metal band Trouble. Written and developed over a four year period, The Distortion Field would be the first Trouble album to feature Exhorder vocalist Kyle Thomas, who had also previously sang for the band from 1997 - 2001. It is also notable as the first Trouble album to feature drummer Mark Lira and the longest Trouble album, spanning sixty-one minutes.

History[]

Development on The Distortion Field had begun as early as the Fall of 2008 when the band initially recruited Kory Clarke (Warrior Soul) as their new vocalist.[1] Initially titled The Dark Riff, initially cited as a "classic doom album"[2] and tentatively set for a 2009 release.[3] A new song in "Hunters of Doom" would begin showing up in the live set for the band's November 2009 tour.[4] However a series of delays would take place with recording, including Kory Clarke leaving the band in early 2012.[5]

On 18 October 2012 production would resume, with Kyle Thomas taking over the vocal role.[6] Recording would be largely finished by the end of 2012,[7] with Jeff Olson also joining in the recording sessions on keyboards.[8] The band had also tried to get Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down) on the album as a guest.[9] On 16 May details on The Distortion Field would be revealed, including a tracklist and release date.[10]

The Distortion Field would see release on 16 July 2013 in North America and 23 August in Europe via FRW Records, selling 760 copies in the States in it's first week, landing on #25 on Billboard's Top New Artists Charts.[11] The Distortion Field would attain mostly positive reviews. HM Magazine would award four stars out of five, stating that The Distortion Field is easily much heavier than much of Trouble's previous output.[12] Metal Assault would award a 7.5/10, praising the opening song "When The Sky Comes Down", along with the first half of the record and Kyle Thomas' performance.[13] Blabbermouth would also award an 8/10 score, noting a grunge influence throughout, drawing comparisons to King's X, Pearl Jam and doom metal contemporaries Saint Vitus. In closing the review would state that The Distortion Field "is largely a pleaser, even if it would've best been served at forty minutes instead of an hour. Let the jury decide on TROUBLE's fate at this point; at least they make a reputable argument for resurrection.".[14]

Other notable reviews would include the likes of Invisible Oranges (positive),[15] Exclaim! (7/10),[16] Metal Forces (7/10),[17] Sea of Tranqulity (4 Stars),[18] and This is Not a Scene (3/5 Stars).[19]
