The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale (2017) |
The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale is a documentary film about Melvins, released in 2017 via Hellsmore Media and Idlehanz. It would chronicle the band's career from their beginning to 2016's Basses Loaded (Though omitting any mention of 2002's Hostile Ambient Takeover).
With work beginning on the documentary in late 2014, a Kickstarter would be announced in early 2015, featuring exclusive artwork by HAZE XXL, Shepard Fairey, Brian Walsby and Arik Roper for various backers.[1] Ultimately the Kickstarter would meet it's $75,000 production goal by it's due date, the final amount being $98,953.[2] Each backer would get an MP3 download of four exclusive live tracks. A special box-set edition designed by Mackie Osborne was also offered for backers of at least $300, limited to 250 copies and containing replica flyers, an exclusive t-shirt and two bonus DVDs.[3]
Every member of The Melvins, along with several associated people with the band over the years, would be interviewed (Even the band's namesake in Melvin "Pete" Loman.). However, a few people associated with the band would decline. Former bassist Lori Black outright refused to participate in the documentary. Joe Preston also notably declined, citing a lack of interest. Mark Deutrom was initially interested in being interviewed for the documentary but ultimately declined. Lastly, Dave Grohl was approached but unable to contribute to being "busy" at the time.[4]
The Colossus of Destiny was ultimately released in 2017 as a double DVD and double Blu-Ray.
