The Birth of Sol (also known as The Birth of Sol (The Demo Tapes)) is a compilation album released initially by Yawning Man in 2009 and later in 2018. This release chronicles all of the demo recordings of the band in their initial 1980s run, the demos themselves only ever given away to close friends. It is also to date the only Yawning Man recordings to feature Larry Lalli as the band chose to record as a trio from the 2000s onwards. Tracks 9 - 22 were recorded in 1986 in La Quinta, California while the first eight songs were recorded in Cathedral City.
Originally the intent was to release the album in 2007 but due to unknown reasons, Arce shelved the release "indefinitely". Two years later test pressings would surface and The Birth of Sol would be released digitally on iTunes. In 2018 Solid 7 Records would issue The Birth of Sol as a double cassette limited to 100 copies while Cobraside Distribution would issue a white double LP.
