Tales of Creation is the fourth album by Swedish doom metal band Candlemass. Recorded in the Summer of 1989 and released that September, Tales of Creation has an emphasis on shorter and more up-tempo songs, along with short narrations throughout. Notably it would also be the last studio album to feature Messiah Marcolin until his return in the 2000s, leading up to 2005's Candlemass.
Background[]
Leading up to the development of Tales of Creation, several songs had already been written before the album was recorded, five of which recorded by Nemesis for a demo entitled Tales of Creation in 1985.[1] "Under The Oak" had already been recorded by the band for the band's 1986 debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. All five songs that appeared on the demo would be properly recorded and slightly re-worked for the album, Edling describing the lyrics as "almost half a bible".[2]
Leif Edling originally wanted another Thomas Cole painting for the cover, but his bandmates "talked him out of it". A modified Gustave Doré work called "The Creation of Light" was used instead.
Ultimately upon release the album would sell well and attain positive reception,[3] peaking at 48 on the Swedish Albums Chart.[4] A music video would be made for "Dark Reflections".
Tales of Creation would be re-issued in the 2000s via Powerline, Peaceville Records and Candlelight Records, all of which containing liner notes, a re-master and a second disc featuring the original Tales of Creation demo, along with an Interview and the music video for "Dark Reflections".
