Nebula / Lowrider (1999) |
Sun Creature is the second EP by the California stoner rock band Nebula. It would be released in March 1999 via Man's Ruin Records, the only Nebula release on the label. The album is compared to Fu Manchu's Eatin' Dust (also released on Man's Ruin) stating that there are many "similarities" in the sound and energy of it.
Tracks 1 and 3 were recorded by Jack Endino at Private Radio in Seattle circa August 1998. Tracks 2 and 4 were recorded by Joe Hogan at LoHo Studios in NYC circa June 1998. The last track, "Fly On", would be exclusive to the CD version of the EP.[1] All four songs would be placed on the compilation Dos EP's, though "Fly On" would be edited down to three minutes. Thus, the nine-minute version of "Fly On" would be exclusive to this release.
Sun Creature would garner positive reviews at the time of release.[2] Notably, Steve Turner of Mudhoney would write about the EP for The Rocket, stating: "This EP is a perfect place to start your Nebula experience. Smokin' Woman is an ode to a sexy, smokin' woman, and who can't relate to that? Sun Creature is pot-fueled "X-Files" paranoia. Rollin' My Way to Freedom is just plain pot-fueled, and Fly On is eight-plus minutes of flying guitars and bongo drums. Interestingly, Glass says he prefers the term "acid rock" to their recent media tag of "stoner rock." Hmmm. Sun Creature was produced in part by Jack Endino, who's just finished work on their sure-to-be-stellar upcoming LP. Again, Nebula are the one."[3]
