Sugar Daddy Live is a live album by the Melvins, released on 31 May 2011.[1]

Background[]

Sugar Daddy Live[]

Sugar Daddy Live would be initially announced in February 2011.[2] The songs are taken from their 2008 tour, with the majority of the tracks coming from their two most recent studio albums at the time, (A) Senile Animal and Nude with Boots. Notably the show is cited at a fictitious venue known as The Busta-Guts Club in Downey, California, thus making the exact recording date in question a mystery. Two songs from the same show that were left off of the live album were released separately. "Suicide in Progress" was released in a split 7" with Totimoshi on Volcom Entertainment. "Billy Fish" was released as "Billy Fish Alive" as part of the Joyful Noise 2013 flexi series.

Sugar Daddy Live attained generally positive reviews.[3][4][5]

The Sugar Daddy Split Series[]

The Sugar Daddy Split Series would be formally announced on 14 December 2011. Initially planned as a 7" series in similar vein to Singles 1-12 and the Hostile Ambient Takeover singles series, the series would be made into 12" singles due to limitations on two songs. Selecting bands that the Melvins had personally enjoyed, the first bands announced would be Cows, U-Men, OFF!, Fucked Up, Mudhoney and Butthole Surfers.[6] The first two volumes of the 12" series would be released on 13 February 2012 and would take nearly three years to complete, with the final volume on 9 February 2015. Notably around the same time a singles series was being done surrounding several covers on the 2013 album Everybody Loves Sausages, along with singles related to the 2013 album Tres Cabrones and the 2014 album Hold It In.

Several of the volumes would be released in alternate colors and with foil covers. Several bands were rumored or originally proposed, such as Tweak Bird, The Gories and Primus but ultimately would change.

The Volumes would be released as follows:

  • Vol. 1: U-Men and Vol. 2: Cows - 13 February 2012
  • Vol. 3: Killdozer and Vol. 4: OFF! - 28 April 2012
  • Vol. 5: Midwest Hardcore and Vol. 6: Butthole Surfers - 19 September 2012
  • Vol. 7: Mudhoney and Vol. 8: Fucked Up - 26 January 2013
