Start The Machine is the eighth studio album by the California stoner rock band Fu Manchu, released in the Fall of 2004 via DRT Entertainment, the only Fu Manchu release with the label. It would be released on 14 September 2004 in North America[1] and 24 January 2005 in Europe.[2] Start The Machine would notably be the first Fu Manchu album to feature drummer Scott Reeder.
Background[]
The end of 2003 and the start of 2004 would see Fu Manchu working with several movies and television shows such as recording the theme song for "West Coast Choppers",[3] the television movie "Motorcycle Mania 3"[4] and making an appearance on Discovery Channel's "Monster Garage".[5][6] In the meantime Fu Manchu had written several new songs for a follow-up album since Mammoth Records folded in 2002. After signing a distribution deal for Europe with SPV/Steamhammer to release Go For It... Live! Fu Manchu would officially announce that they had signed with DRT Entertainment on 10 May 2004.[7][8]
With further details being revealed over the summer[9][10] Start The Machine would see release via DRT Entertainment on 14 September 2004. Fu Manchu would tour the United States that November and December alongside the likes of Clutch and High on Fire. More touring in support of Start The Machine would take place the next year, with one North American leg as support to Corrosion of Conformity.
Start The Machine would see positive reception from numerous publications such as PopMatters,[11] MusicOMH,[12] metal.de,[13] Ox Fanzine[14] and The Sleeping Shaman[15] among others.
Fu Manchu's own label At The Dojo would re-issue Start The Machine in 2019, on CD and for the first time on LP. Initial copies of the vinyl re-issue would come with a flexi of a live rendition of "Written in Stone", performed at the 2003 edition of Roadburn Festival.[16]
