Slabdragger are a three-piece doom/sludge metal band from Croydon, South London, England.
History[]
Slabdragger started writing and jamming in 2008 with Yusuf Tary on bass and vocals, Sam "Shredder" Thredder on guitars and vocals and drummer Matt Byrne. They played their first gigs in late 2009.[1] The name "Slabdragger" came to Sam Thredder when he was recording a death metal band and a growl sounded "like a concrete slab being dragged across a concrete floor".[2] In 2010 they recorded their debut album Regress, which was mastered by Scott Hull (Pigdestroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed).[3] Regress was released as a double lp on Holy Roar Records on July 4, 2011.[4] A CD version followed on Church Of Fuck on October 29, 2012.[5] This was followed up by a split LP with Meadows, released in August 2012 on Head Of Crom.[6]
Rise Of The Dawncrusher, the group's sci-fi themed second full length studio album was released February 26, 2016, after numerous difficulties and delays, including Thredder suffering a collapsed lung and two drummer changes.[7]Holy Roar once again issued to vinyl and CD editions.
October 2017 saw the release of a split 12" with Wren, titled Mothers Of Beef And The Magic Of Invention, with Slabdragger covering Frank Zappa's "Muffin Man" and Wren taking on Captain Beefheart's "Electricity".[8]Holy Roar released the split in three different colour variations.[9]
The Wren split would turn out to be Slabdragger's last release on Holy Roar Records, as the band severed ties with the label in September 2020 after Holy Roar's head and founder Alex Fitzpatrick was accused of sexual abuse and rape.[10]
