Background[]
In 1996, Amphetamine Reptile Records would release a Melvins single once a month, limited to 600 copies and depicting the same skull and font in twelve color variations. These were released as follows:
- January 1996 - Lexicon Devil / Pigtro
- February 1996 - In The Rain / Spread Eagle
- March 1996 - Leech / Queen
- April 1996 - Way of The World / Theme
- May 1996 - It's Shoved / Forgotten Principles
- June 1996 - GGIIBBYY / Theresa Screams
- July 1996 - Poison / Double Troubled
- August 1996 - Specimen / All At Once
- September 1996 - Jacksonville / Dallas
- October 1996 - The Bloat / Fast Forward
- November 1996 - Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings / HDYF
- December 1996 - How-++-Harry Lauders Walking Stick Tree / Zodiac
Many of the songs would comprise of unreleased demos, live cuts, sound collages and outtakes from Houdini, Stoner Witch and Stag. "Forgotten Principles" originally appeared in the same demo sessions as Mangled Demos From 1983. "Poison" is the Melvin's mix of the track on Wayne Kramer's album The Hard Stuff, originally by his band MC5. "Zodiac" would actually be the band Brutal Truth covering the song.
In 2012, Mark Deutrom would comment about "Dallas", stating: "L7 was large clubs. Lots of improv on that, and sometimes nothing but improv on some "special" shows around then. Almost like some kind of demented variety show. Good times and fond memories."[1]
HDYF[]
The liner notes would state "featuring Yoko Ono of IMA fame" as a joke, when in fact it would be a jam session featuring The Melvins and IMA. While credited to Ono and Sean Lennon, it has been speculated to be a cover of Arthur Lee and Love. The recording stemmed from IMA and Melvins performing together at The Roxy, joining Yoko Ono and IMA for the last two songs.[2] Notably The Melvins would play The Troubadour on 22 July 1997, with Yoko Ono joining the band for "HDYF" and "Rising".[3]
There have been interviews and email questions alluding to the story behind the cover:
"We were really surprised when we got a call from Sean," Buzz recalls. "He said, 'I'm a big fan of your band, and my morn likes your music too.' I'm like 'Oh, Jesus.'" Lennon invited the Melvins to play the L.A. date of IMA, his and Ono's group. Buzz and Dale eagerly accepted, joining IMA for two songs at the close of their sold-out Roxy show. They subsequently recorded one of those tunes with IMA, the Melvinesque "How Do You Feel." For Buzz, such acknowledgment is a vindication. "I'm glad I stuck to my guns, though I wish my bank account showed it. I'm not working at a regular job, but I'm not putting a down payment on that little dream house either. I can't really put a price tag on things like the IMA show. I'm just really happy that these things happen."[4]
Hey James, timo here, hope yer well!! Lets see..(that was a while ago..!!) Our band was actually called "IMA" (not "IMO") ...IMA means "now" in japanese...I'm pretty sure the song was something that sean and I came up with...we demoed an eary version of it in NYC sometime prior to that, but frankly it was a pretty "melvins-esque" feeling/ homage-ish song to begin with...! Ill check with sean bout this just to be sure..As far as the vocals/ lyric goes, you'd have to ask Yoko..! Working with the melvins' guys was great, theyre just super friendly/ cool, as was mario c..! I went to Evergreen from 89-93 so I got into them when i was there, personally I was really psyched to play with them, for sure, we all were..! Anyway, hopefully this helps..! you can try to contact Yoko thru MySpace and Facebook, I'm pretty sure she, or someone that she works with checks those accts etc.. (can u possibly send me an MP3 of HDYF? I obviously wont send/ copy it for anyone...!) Also If you would send me a mailing address for y'all, I'd like to send you some shit from my band The Netherlands, along with another project I've been workin on, tentatively titled "Goatard" (!) take it easy, timo[5]
