Rosenkeller (Also known as Rosenkeller e.V.) is an underground venue and a student club based in Jena, Germany. Founded as a venue space in 1966 for club events and concerts, the space was previously an underground wine cellar several levels below the city itself in ancient times.[1]
The network of historic wine cellars of this iconic club, resurrected by students in the 1960s, now echo to DJs, live acts, readings and other cultural events. it's kept vibrant by each new generation of Jena students, so you can expect reggae, no-wave, electro, drag and other themed nights, plus a genuinely welcoming vibe.[2]
Biography[]
If you step through the front building into the courtyard, you will find the entrance to the former wine cellars of the inn. The Gothic barrel vaults lie on different levels and were unused for a long time after the decline of viticulture in Jena. In 1965, students from the agricultural faculty of the Friedrich Schiller University began to work on a voluntary basis with the excavations and the reconstruction of the vaults. On May 3, 1966, the "Student Club Rosenkeller" - the second of its kind after the Weimar "Kasseturm" - was opened. Since then, the Rosenkeller has developed into the most important youth cultural center in Jena's city center.
There is mainly live and disco music for dancing and listening to, but also lectures, readings and discussions. This could perhaps also be found in some other clubs, but in the Rosenkeller this creates a fascinating mixture of pub, communication and self-organized culture. This is probably due to the structure, because the rooms are not managed by a private pub, but by a registered association. Commerce does not have to be in the foreground and there is room for friendly encounters, for flirting, for culture ...
