Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and actor born in St. Louis, Missouri and currently based out of New York.

Initially known for his tenure with the math-rock band 90 Day Men whom formed in 1997, Lowe is also known for his solo endeavor in Lichens, a project that emphasizes his seamless skills with multiple instruments including his works with modular synths and his wordless vocal performances.[1] In live performance, Lichens compositions are spontaneous arrangements of voice and modular synthesizer patch pieces, later with visual projections. In the past, Lowe would use acoustic and electric guitars, and on some occasions, percussion. Along with his performances and prolific output under the Lichens moniker he has released several albums and other works under his own name. He would also be known for his involvement with several bands of a wide range of genres such as post-rock (Russian Circles), stoner metal (Om) and black metal (Twilight) just to scratch the surface.

Along with a career working with several bands in a wide range of sounds, Lowe has also contributed to several film scores and is an actor, having notably collaborated with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson for the films Sicario and Arrival, both soundtracks nominated for several awards. In 2020 he would be the lead composer for the remake to the classic horror film Candyman, though that film would be delayed to 2021. His acting range would stretch to various documentaries and short films among a lead role in A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness.

Since his career began in 1992 Lowe has contributed vocals and instrumentation to three studio albums with 90 Day Men, six studio albums under the Lichens moniker, six studio albums under his own name and two studio albums with Om among numerous film scores, guest contributions, collaborative works and other releases.

Biography[]

Early Life and 90 Day Men[]

Lowe was born in Kansas City, Missouri, describing his upbringing as growing up in "the metropolitan area, which really was a small city" and retroactively describing Kansas City as "truly a culturally viable place".[2] Prior to joining 90 Day Men in 1997, Lowe would be involved with a band known as Secular Theme among other projects. 90 Day Men originally formed in 1995 and their name is a slang term used by police officers to refer to prison inmates who are due to undergo psychiatric examination. Early on their sound was post-hardcore art-punk indebted to Slint and their various Louisville brethren (Rodan, June of 44, etc.) as well as D.C.'s Dischord stable. As keyboards became an increasingly important part of their core sound, however, they shifted into a more accessible, jam-friendly style, wrapping prominent piano melodies in droning, reverb-heavy noise.[3]

Robert Lowe joined the group in 1997 on trumpet and vocals but later moved to bass guitar when McWilliams departed. Their first recording with this line-up was the 7" single, If You Can Bake a Cake, You Can Build a Bomb, in 1997, followed by a short Midwest tour.[4] An EP entitled 1975-1977-1998 on Temporary Residence in 1998. In late 1998, they signed with Southern Records, who released their first full-length album, entitled (It (Is) It) Critical Band, on 26 September 2000 to positive reviews.[5] 90 Day Men would tour the United States in the Fall of 2000, followed by a tour of Europe the next winter, which would lead to the band recording a John Peel Session.[6]

A decisive moment came with the introduction in 2001 of Rhodes piano player and keyboardist Andy Lansangan, half way through writing [it (is) it]. Lansangan's style and musical presence gave the band's songs the ability to move in new directions. Although they retained much of their New Wave, art-rock sensibility, the piano became the main instrument. Where once there had been angular unhinged riffs, there were now pastoral piano motifs.[7] In 2002 the 90 Day Men went into record the new songs with John Congleton (of the pAper chAse) and the result was To Everybody, released on 8 February 2002 to critical acclaim.[8][9]

After a brief tour of Europe and the United States, they returned to the studio, again with Congleton behind the desk, but this time at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio and John McEntire's SOMA studios. The result was two fold, the Too Late Or Too Dead EP that would be released in September 2003. What would follow would be the band's third album Panda Park, released 24 February 2004. Panda Park would attain significant critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork,[10] Tiny Mix Tapes,[11] Scene Point Blank,[12] Exclaim![13] and Stylus Magazine[14] among other publications.[15][16]

90 Day Men would tour North America to support Panda Park and after a New Years Eve performance,[17] would tour Japan in the Spring of 2005.[18] Sometime after, 90 Day Men would disband.

Lichens[]

Lichens would be created by Lowe in 2004 for his solo and collaborative studio recordings and live performances. Lichens uses modular synthesizer to loop, manipulate and process his wordless vocals in real time to create hypnotizing, deep listening drone soundscapes. Largely inspired by works of Harry Partch, who invented his own 43-note scale system within the frequency range of a conventional Western 12-tone octave, Robert Lowe is primarily interested in synthesizer as a unique instrument with an ability to make sounds "right in between the notes". Apart from his voice, Lichens uses other unconventional sounds sources, including a human body or plants, which are connected to a synthesizer through a MIDI Sprout (a custom-built box which reads bio-signals through EEG pads and converts them into MIDI signal). The name Lichens is derived from the Lichen, a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship and the oldest known lifeforms on Earth.[19]

In an interview with The Quietus, Lowe would speak at length about the project and it's evolution:

"Performing solo, improvising and creating spontaneous music based around my voice, perhaps augmented by or coupled with a few other instruments, I got to the point where I wasn't able to eke out much more from, say, those stringed instruments. I had established that particular vocabulary within my work, and I was set to move on. So I started working with hardwired synthesizers; a lot of vintage analogue synths."

[On his voice] "More than anything it's just the nature of my particular voice. The impetus was to create a situation where the voice was showcased as an instrument," Lowe explains. "I think some people have come around to it now, but at the time I feel like that was something that was really missing within the sort of scene I was in."

[On Modular Synth and Harry Partch] "They're interchangeable, and have the potential to be ever transforming. A synthesiser can get right there in between the notes. The idea of working within a twelve tone system, the Western scale, is not the most exciting to me. He [Partch] was definitely important in my thinking - creating his own system like that, and who's to say that it's right or wrong? It just is what it is."

— Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, The Quietus[20]

Lichens would self-release a limited CD-R entitled R. Brown in 2004 along with making his debut live performance that August at the Million Tongues Fesival in Chicago.[21] Bill Mayer of the Chicago Reader would speak of Lichens' debut, stating "Lowe's finger picked acoustic guitar sounded like he's spent time pondering Fahey's legacy, but his looped, wordless vocals were reminiscent of Meredith Monk.".[22] Signing with Kranky Records, Lowe would release The Psychic Nature of Being on 3 October 2005, with the vinyl edition being handled via Holy Mountain Records. Presenting three long tracks recorded over a single improvisation session without overdubbing, The Psychic Nature of Being would attain positive reception from publications such as Pitchfork,[23] Brainwashed[24] and Tiny Mix Tapes among others.[25]

Lichens would spend 2006 recording new material and performing various gigs with the likes of Comets on Fire, Russian Circles and Vetiver among an appearance at Festival Soy in France that October.[26] In 2007 Lichens would release splits with Lexie Mountain and Cloudland Canyon among two albums: Omns which was released by Kranky on 7 May 2007 and the collaborative work White Lichens (With the drone group White Light) via Holy Mountain Records on 23 April 2007. Omns would contain a live performance at the Empty Bottle as a bonus DVD and would attain further positive reception,[27][28][29] cited by Drowned in Sound as "extremely vast and explorative"[30] and Brainwashed stating that "The album alone is superb, but the DVD pushes this package over the edge and fixes it in my mind as astonishing.".[31]

Following gigs supporting the likes of Locrian and Sonic Youth in 2007,[32] Lichens would begin touring more frequently in 2008, beginning with a string of West Coast dates supporting Om (notably the last dates with the original lineup.) before embarking on an extensive tour supporting the Texas-based post-rock quartet Explosions in The Sky. Lichens would also at that years All Tomorrows Parties Festival in Minehead (Also curated by Explosions in the Sky) and tour the United Kingdom, with several dates also performing under the White/Lichens collaboration.[33] Lichens would also release several tour-only releases around this time such as Spegulo En Fazo, 8 and Tanith.

Lichens would tour throughout Europe and North America through the Spring and Summer of 2009, performing with the likes of Ghost, Russian Circles, Sweet Cobra, Bonnie Prince Billy and Jóhann Jóhannsson, the latter whom Lowe would collaborate with for several film soundtracks.[34][35] Lichens would also open for Boredoms' Boadrum 9 concert in New York[36] and tour with Om through the Fall of 2009 and portions of 2010 though not just as a supporting artist but also performing with the band, reverting them into a trio.

Lichens would collaborate with the Berlin-based improv project Air Cushion Finish, releasing Biesenthal on 6 February 2010. A new studio album entitled Lítið Fólk would see release on 20 November 2012 via Belgian label Morc Records. The project would tour more sporadically but make notable appearances over the years such as Kranky Records' 20th Anniversary Showcase,[37] Unsound Festival, Elevate Festival[38] Resonate Festival and Serralves em Festa![39] among other shows. The last Lichens release to date under that moniker would be a live cassette entitled 3110?/?2410?/?1810, released on 14 November 2014. By 2015 Lowe would begin releasing and performing more under his own name as he felt the two styles curated between Lichens and under his own name "melded" and thus opted to just use his own name.[40]

Solo Endeavors[]

In 2008 Robert Lowe would also begin composing releases under his real name, beginning with the tour CD-R Spegulo En Fazo. Solo performances under his own name would be largely sporadic, notably one early show being the first ever concert Saint Vitus Bar would host on 6 May 2011.[41] Among collaborations with Rose Lazar, Lowe would release his first solo album Fazo IV: La Kvalito De Speguloj via Rainbow Body Records in 2010. Lowe would begin performing live on occasion under his own name, a notable early gig in collaboration with Exploratorium circa 2014.[42][43]

A conceptual cassette release in Terre Plate would see release circa May 2011 via Los Discos Enfantasmes. The next year would see release of Timon Irnok Manta via Type (TYPE111) as an LP release, with critics such as Brainwashed noting the elements of drone, electronic and raga throughout.[44] A few years later would see Lowe working with French experimental musician Ariel Kalma for the colaborative work We Know Each Other Somehow, complimented by a documentary DVD entitled Sunshine Soup. We Know Each Other Somehow would attain critical praise from several reviewers such as Freq,[45] and The Quietus[46] to name a few.

Lowe would produce several more works in the next few years, beginning with the 2016 LP Thought Withdrawal, recorded in Oakland circa February 2016. Lowe would release several albums in 2017 in Kulthan, Two Orb Reel, Levitation Praxis Pt. 4 and Marlek, along with a collection of unreleased works in Ceres. While in isolation throughout 2020, Lowe would release several previously unreleased compositions on Bandcamp, including several live recordings.

In regards to live performances under his own name, Lowe had been performing as such since the late 2000s, largely as part of special marquee shows such as the very first concert at Saint Vitus Bar on 6 May 2011[47] or festivals such as moers festival (2016),[48], Groupe de Recherches Musicales (2016), Presencias/electrónica MX (2017),[49] Synthposium, (2017), Le Guess Who? (2017),[50] Unsound Festival (2018)[51] and Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival[52] just to name a few.

  • Lowe would be part of a project known as Queequeg, a band specifically formed for the 2013 film A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness, where he was also the lead actor. The band's name would be derived from a fictional character in the 1851 novel Moby-Dick by American author Herman Melville and the band consisted of Lowe, Weasel Walter (7000 Dying Rats, Behold The Arctopus, Cellular Chaos, etc.), Nicholas McMaster (Geryon, Krallice, Bloody Panda, etc.) and Hunter Hunt-Hendrix (Liturgy, Hevm, Holy Wars, Survival, etc.). In the movie they play a live set composed by 5 original songs, which is fully available on the official soundtrack.[60] The concert scene was shot in Norway and the show is entirely filmed as a long take. Queequeg also played a few gigs in Norway besides the one for the movie.[61]

His earliest roles would be a minor acting role in the 2012 horror film Last Kind Words,[62] contributed a Lichens composition to the Indian drama film Miss Lovely[63] and various contributions to the 2012 Short Film Wolves From Another Kingdom.[64]

Lowe would participate as a composer and the lead actor in the experimental art/black metal film A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness, directed by Ben Russell and Ben Rivers. The film's premise would see Lowe Lowe undertaking a long, enduring experience living in and moving through three distinct Scandinavian environments: a commune in Estonia which he is a member of, a wild forest in Northern Finland which he explores in solitude, and, finally, a neo-pagan black metal performance in Norway which Lowe himself participates in with the band Queequeg. Filming took place in three locations: on the island of Vormsi in Estonia, in the wilderness of the northern municipality of Hyrynsalmi in Finland, and in Oslo, Norway. The sequence featuring the Norwegian black metal band Queequeg was filmed in a single take.[65][66]

The film was first shown at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland on 8 August 2013.
