Rainbow is a collaborative album between the Japanese experimental band Boris and Japanese psychedelic guitarist Michio Kurihara. Recorded throughout 2006, Rainbow's sound would lean heavily into neo-psychedelia and shoegaze.[1][2] Rainbow would be initially released in late 2006 via Pedal Records and later via Drag City Records in North America and Inoxia Records on vinyl.
Background[]
Work would begin on Rainbow from January to July 3006 at Peace Music with Souichirou Nakamura (White Heaven). Rainbow would be announced in the Fall and ultimately released on CD circa 23 December 2006 via Pedal Records. The North American CD (Which would have a different closing track) would see release on 22 May 2007 and the vinyl edition (Both standard and special edition) would see release in June of 2007. A release party for the album would be hosted at Shimokitazawa Shelter on 4 February 2007, which would be recorded and multi-tracked. Seven of the fifteen songs performed would be released as a 2018 LP entitled Futomeido.[3]
Both the Pedal CD and the LP versions feature liner notes in Portuguese. Inoxia Records would release the album in two versions: an unlimited LP which contains the album (same as Pedal CD version), and a double LP box set with a 50-page photo book in a special cover, the album on clear vinyl, a second LP containing two bonus instrumental tracks (also on clear vinyl), and a DVD featuring the music video for "Rainbow". The video for "Rainbow" would be directed by foodunited. The title track on the 2xLP version features an alternate mix with a different guitar solo.
Rainbow would elicit praise from numerous publications. Brandon Stosuy, writing for Pitchfork and awarding an 8.1/10, praising the relatively fresh sound among a sea of familiar releases.[4] Brainwashed Magazine would heavily praise the album, stating "There is no doubt that Rainbow is a gem of an album, definitely a highlight of both Boris and Kurihara's back catalogues. It is a far cry from the doom of Boris' past and more in line with Ghost's more ballsy moments—some sort of strange middle ground between the more ethereal Ghost and fuzzed out bliss of Boris. Thankfully Rainbow was not made into a stupid limited edition like so much of Boris' recent releases, as it's screaming to be a strong contender for album of the year.".[5] The Line of Best Fit would score an 8/10 and say it "might be Boris’ most accessible work to date."[6]
Other notable positive reviews for Rainbow would come from the likes of Impose Maagazine,[7] Alarm Magazine,[8] Treble Zine,[9] Paste Magazine,[10] Pop Matters (8/10),[11] Stylus Magazine (A-),[12] Rock Sound (8/10)[13] and Metal Rules (4/5).[14]
