Hugo Larralde, better known by his stage name Pato Larralde, was a vocalist in the Argentine heavy metal scene for nearly thirty years. Larralde was best known for his long-running band Sauron, one of the earliest stoner/doom bands in Argentina and named for a major villain in the works of J.R.R. Tolkein. He was also known for the alien-themed stoner band Los Antiguos and collaborating with a wide range of bands in his career.

Larralde was also the nephew of the famous Argentina folk singer José Larralde.

History[]

Sauron would be founded in 1993 by Pato alongside guitarist J.B. Larralde, with drummer Gustavo Boulay joining the next year. Little is known of the band's beginnings but by the time Peter Barrett would join the band, Sauron would release their eponymous debut on 1 March 1997 via DBN Records. The band would keep active for a follow-up, signing with Vampyr Discos and releasing El color que cayó del cielo on 1 November 1999. Working with Pablo Gallo at Totem Studios, Sobrenatural would follow on 1 June 2003. The band would also contribute covers of Black Sabbath and Kyuss respectively to two tribute albums in 2004: Sabbath Crosses and Listen Without Distraction: A Tribute To Kyuss.

Following a lineup change, La guerra del fuego saw release on 1 September 2009. Three years later in November 2012, Sauron would release their fifth album El último árbol sobre la tierra. It would take six years (and a change of drummers) before the band would independently release their sixth studio album Los ojos del cuadro (Nuestra particular forma de ver las cosas) on 12 September 2018. The band would remain active until 2020.

Los Antiguos (en. The Ancients) would be founded in late 2012 by Larralde alongside members of Avernal and Cruzdiablo. Unlike Sauron's themes of high fantasy and the occult, Los Antiguos' lyrical themes would be based more in aliens and personal issues.

Not long after forming the band would record an EP in January 2013, resulting in the release of Simple on 3 May the same year. Two years later on 9 May, Los Antiguos would release their debut album Madera prohibida. The band would be a frequent at festivals such as Noiseground and Viaje de Agua, all the while sharing the stage with the likes of Poseidótica, Elefante Guerrero Psíquico Ancestral, Dragonauta, Buffalo, Radio Moscow and many others.[1][2]A second album in Oro para las naves would see release on 11 May 2019, with a special edition packaged like a replica UFO. The band would remain active until 2021.

Larralde would appear as a guest for many bands in the Argentina rock and metal scenes, including Avernal, Beta Vazquez and Poseidótica to name a few. Larralde would appear on two songs for the metal band Bark on their 2020 album "Written in Stone", released in December 2020 and his last studio recordings before his passing.

On 11 June 2021 vocalist and co-founder Pato Larralde suffered a stroke on and died two days later (13 June 2021) after his condition worsened due to COVID-19.[3][4][5]
