Nude With Boots LP

Nude With Boots is the sixteenth studio album by Melvins. Recorded in the Winter of 2008 and released that June via Ipecac, it would be the follow-up to the critically praised 2006 album (A) Senile Animal. The second studio album to feature the "double-drum lineup", Nude With Boots would be praised for it's more rock direction and is cited as one of their most accessible works[1][2] and cited as one of the band's favorite works.[3]

Background[]

Following an extensive touring cycle through 2006 and 2007 in support of the 2006 album (A) Senile Animal, The Melvins would begin work on a follow-up, with songs like "Billy Fish" and "Suicide in Progress" showing up in setlists as early as 2007. Recording would begin in January 2008. According to an interview with Louder Sound, Buzz Osborne only used one guitar through the entirety of the recording sessions.[4]

Details on the album would surface, followed by a CD release on 8 July 2008 (7-8-08). Notably, the song "The Savage Hippy" was originally known as "Real Fucking Nasty" and appeared on a 2007 split with Halo of Flies.[5] "Dies Iraea" is an adaptation of the theme song from the 1980 Stanley Kubrick horror film, The Shining (based on Hector Berlioz' interpretation of the "Dies Irae"). A vinyl edition was originally composed in 2008 with an alternate cover but would be recalled due to warping issues from the packaging.[6] The vinyl edition would officially come on 3 November 2009. "Nude With Boots" (Along with (A) Senile Animal and The Bride Screamed Murder) would be re-issued on vinyl in 2021.[7]

Nude With Boots would attain mostly positive reviews, mainly for it's more rock-oriented sound. Zach Baron, writing for Pitchfork and awarding a 7.0/10, would compare "The Kicking Machine" to Led Zeppelin and praise the drum sound throughout.[8] Impose Magazine would also note the Led Zeppelin feel but felt the album was forgettable.[9] Your Last Rites would also see a classic rock observation but would be more keen to the record, stating the following: "Nude With Boots is a roller coaster ride, and its discontinuity keeps the listener on his or her toes. There’s enough straight-ahead Melvins-rock here to generalize it in that way, but the album’s nuances and oddities make it a complex foray into the weird. If you give it enough time I think you’ll find it to be of the same quality as (A) Senile Animal, and of a similar cloth. The Melvins have marked their 25th anniversary with one foot in the comfort of their established sound, one foot exploring the more modern tendencies begun on (A) Senile Animal and one foot tapping away to their early ‘70s heroes."[10]

Consequence of Sound would elicit high praise to the record with an "A-" score, citing Nude With Boots as "a first class ticket to the ultimate sludge metal experience." and that "the Melvins truly opened up and found a significant sound with meaning and drive."[11] Other notable reviews would come from the likes of Punk News (3.5/5),[12] Drowned in Sound (8/10),[13] Nude With Boots would rank #1 on Stonerrock.com's Top 28 Albums of 2008.[14]
