Noise is a studio album by Japanese experimental band Boris. The Japanese edition of the album was released on 18 June 2014 via Avex Group's sub-label Tearbridge Records and consists of the original album plus other songs previously released on other endeavors, such as "Kimi no Yukue" which was used for a promotional video for the Chunsoft video game Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward in Japan. This is the second Boris album released through a major label (the first one being 2011's New Album, also released by Avex Group/Tearbridge). It was released on 17 June 2014 through Sargent House record label internationally on both CD and double vinyl.[1][2] A Japanese double vinyl edition was later released by Daymare Recordings, though omitting the bonus tracks from the second CD.
The release date and the covers of the album were announced on 8 April 2014.[3][4][5] Along with the announcement, an edit of the track "Quicksilver" was also released for streaming. a music video for "Vanilla" would be released a month later to promote the album.[6] The band embarked on a North American tour in 2014 in support of the album.[7][8]
Garnering a score of 72/100 on Metacritic,[9] Noise would garner a positive reception.
Background[]
The band began working on the album in early 2013, finishing by the Summer. In the press release, the band stated the following: "their most all-encompassing effort to date. It is an amplification of Boris’ endless pursuit of musical extremes while moving aggressive, intense rock into new territories. Here, the band masterfully intermingles sludge-rock, blistering crust punk, shimmering shoegaze, epic thunderous doom, psychedelic melodies and just about everything else they’ve ever done. (The result) is something more bold, streamlined and powerful."[10][11]
Details would surface on the album in the Spring of 2014, with an edited rendition of "Quicksilver" and a music video for "Vanilla" released to promote the album.[12][13] Noise would be initially released as a 2CD via major label Tearbridge Records on 18 June 2014, the second CD entitled Another Noise with songs that would appear in other endeavors as bonus tracks and exclusive to the Tearbridge version. On 8 June, NPR would stream the entire album to promote it's release internationally via Sargent House (On CD and 2LP) on 17 June.[14]
Noise would garner positive reception from numerous publications such as Pitchfork (7.8/10),[15] The Line of Best Fit (8.5/10),[16] No Rip Cord (8/10),[17] Ghost Cult Magazine (8.5/10),[18] mxdwn[19] and Treble Zine[20] among others.
