Biography

Early life

Born Niko Sirkiä in 1974 in Finland, Niko studied cinematic expression, experimental film and video art. He continued art studies and got a Master’s Degree in Visual Culture and Contemporary Art at Aalto University, Finland.

Thergothon

Thergothon was one of Niko's earliest music projects, a doom/death metal band that subsequently gained notable cult status in the underground metal scene and is often credited as a pioneer of the funeral doom subgenre. Two recordings were completed and released. The group disbanded months before the release of their only album titled Stream from the Heavens.

This Empty Flow

After Thergothon's dissolution, Niko formed This Empty Flow with fellow member Jori Sjöroos in 1994. They released their debut album titled Magenta Skycode in 1996 before disbanding the same year.

Musical style

Niko Skorpio has surveyed the frontiers of underground music since 1990, moving from extreme metal to experimental electronics, industrial noise and beyond. True to the DIY ethic, Niko released his sound works mostly in small editions on his own independent record labels.

Other works

Currently, Niko works with images and sound in various forms and combinations, developing means for immersive audiovisual expression. He founded the PARAFERAL Creative Research Facility as an independent framework for research, development and production of new works. He gives solo and band exhibitions in Finland and his short films and video works have been featured in screenings worldwide.
