Nativity in Black is the first of two Black Sabbath tribute albums, featuring various heavy metal groups paying tribute to the heavy metal pioneers. Along with featuring bands in a wide range of metal sounds it also features one-time collaborations. The first volume would be produced and released in October 1994.

All of the tracks featured on the Nativity in Black albums cover material strictly from the band's 1970 heyday with vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. The title is derived from a widespread yet incorrect assumption surrounding the title of the Black Sabbath song "N.I.B.".

Notes[]

The band Bullring Brummies featured Black Sabbath founding members Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, along with vocalist Rob Halford (Judas Priest), guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich (The Obsessed, Saint Vitus, etc.), and guitarist Brian Tilse (Fight). Their cover of "The Wizard" on the first album is their only official recording, with the musicians coming together specifically for this recording.

The live recording of "War Pigs" by Faith No More was previously included on the band's live album, Live at the Brixton Academy.

Biohazard's cover of "After Forever" was released as a single to promote the album, with two Sabbath covers performed by Cathedral as the b-side.

1000 Homo DJs' version of "Supernaut" was originally released as a 12-inch single in 1990, along with a four-song EP. According to Al Jourgenson he confirmed that the band recorded these songs in the same sessions as The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste. The band also recorded a version with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) on vocals. That version would be later released on Trax! Box (2014, Cleopatra Records).

The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on 4 December 2000. Bob Chiappardi of Concrete Marketing was executive producer for the album. Megadeth's cover of "Paranoid" received a Grammy nomination in 1995 for 'Best Metal Performance'.
