Mats Ekström is a former musician based out of Sweden. He would be best known as the founding drummer of Candlemass, though prior to the formation of that band would be the drummer for Nemesis in 1984. Upon Candlemass' formation in 1984 he would play drums on the band's 1985 demo entitled Witchcraft and a demo in December 1985, followed by the band's debut studio album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, released on 10 June 1986 and is cited as an important album in the development of doom metal. By the end of 1986 he would leave the band, with Jan Lindh taking over the drum role.
Notably, Ekström's father designed the original Candlemass 'horned skull with cross' image that graced the cover of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and is essentially the band's logo.
