Mastiff are a sludge/hardcore band based out of Hull, England. Described as a "miserable band from a miserable city"[1] and described by Kerrang in 2019 as a "Grind-Sludge Molotov Cocktail",[2] Mastiff's sound mixes sludge with elements of hardcore, powerviolence and grindcore. Currently the band has three albums released to date, among a slew of other releases.
History[]
Mastiff would be founded in 2013. Quickly making a mark with early shows in the summer of that year,[3][4] Mastiff would release two EPs in 2014 in Death and Everything Equals Death. Following release of a promo single the next year and an appearance at Bloodstock,[5] work would begin on a debut album.
With a promotional campaign of #wrank beginning circa 16 October 2015,[6] Wrank would be released on 22 February 2016 to positive reviews.[7][8] The band would follow with marquee shows such as Riff Fest.[9]
Mastiff would sign with APF Records in 2017, their debut release on the label being the live album Bork released on 31 August 2017. Amid appearances at the APF Records Showcase, Desertfest London[10] and CvltFest among a gig supporting a reunited Iron Monkey,[11] work would begin on a second studio album. Notably the album would be recorded live at Studio 94 in Hull with producer Mikey Scott.
Plague would see release on 1 February 2019 to significant critical acclaim from the likes of Angry Metal Guy,[12] Kerrang,[13] Echoes and Dust,[14] Distorted Sound Magazine[15] and Ghost Cult Magazine[16] among other publications.[17] A tour of the United Kingdom would follow to support Plague.[18]
Several marquee shows would follow before recording on a third album would begin in the Fall of 2020, set for a 2021 release via APF Records.[19] Signing to eOne, Leave Me The Ashes of The Earth would see release on 10 September 2021 to positive reviews.[20]
