Mastermind is the eighth studio album by the New Jersey stoner rock band Monster Magnet, released initially on 26 October 2010 and their first album on Napalm Records. Notably it would be the band's first charting album in the United States since 2000's God Says No, debuting at #165 on the Billboard 200 with around 3,000 copies sold in it's first week.[1] Notably this album would be the final Monster Magnet release to feature longtime lead guitarist Ed Mundell, whom quit the band on 3 November.[2][3]

BackgroundEdit

Work would begin on the next Monster Magnet album in late 2009 going into 2010. Around the Summer of 2010 Mastermind would officially be announced and set for 26 October release.[4] A music video for "Gods and Punks" would be released on 4 October to further promote the album. Commercially it would be more successful than the band's previous effort 4-Way Diablo, charting in several countries shortly after it's release.[5]

Mastermind received generally positive reception from critics. Blabbermouth, awarding an 8/10, cited the band's "older, more surly" feel cited the album as "it rocks hard and plants a boot in the ass of any naysayer who thought MONSTER MAGNET had nothing left in the tank.".[6] PopMatters praised the album and noted the following tracks to close out: "Hallucination Bomb" boasts a wicked elastic riff that exudes as much menace as Sabbath's Born Again. "Bored With Secrecy" charges along at a rampaging pace that we haven't heard from Wyndorf in ages, and "When the Planes Fell from the Sky" is built around a devastating riff made all the more dramatic by the melancholy tone of Wyndorf's singing. Overall, it's a welcome return to form by a band that's shown a lot more resilience than most people would have expected.".[7] Other reviews whom ranged the album on a more average scale would be The Obelisk,[8] The Guardian,[9] Metal Injection[10] and Stereoboard.[11]
