Manic Frustration is the fifth studio album by American doom metal band Trouble, released in June 1992. It would be the second of two albums on Def American, produced by Rick Rubin, along with featuring drummer Barry Stern. The album marked a change in style toward a faster-paced, psychedelic sound; as opposed to the slower, doom metal style on their previous albums. Rubin in particular felt more highly about the album than their 1990 self-titled. In a retroactive piece conducted by Riff Relevant, the band would state the following about the album: "By the time ‘Manic Frustration’ came around two years later, Rubin listened to the demos during pre-production. He stood up to leave and Wartell asked him, “Wait, aren’t you even going to give us notes?”. To which Rubin simply responded, “No… everything’s perfect.”".[1]
The album would be originally released by Def American in 1992, on CD, Cassette and Vinyl. It would be re-issued in 2020 via Hammerheart Records on the same formats, alongside Trouble, The Skull and Psalm 9.
Manic Frustration has garnered critical acclaim upon release. At the time of release the album a perfect score from Kerrang[2] and a 9/10 from Rock Hard.[3] Manic Frustration has only attained further praise in the time since it's release. Martin Popoff, writing for The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal, would award the album a 10/10 score.[4] Other notable retroactive reviews include the likes of We Must Obey[5] and two reviews from Sputnik Music.[6][7]
