Mangled Demos From 1983 is a compilation album by Melvins released in 2005 via Ipecac Recordings on CD and Alternative Tentacles on double 10" vinyl. Mangled Demos chronicles the earliest known recordings of the band.
Background[]
When the Melvins formed in 1983 they were initially a hardcore punk band. Sometime that same year the band would record ten songs for an album release (Tracks 3-13) though no label was interested in the band until roughly 1986. This compilation compiles every studio recording of the original lineup, before Dale Crover would replace Dillard on drums the next year. Tracks 1 & 2 are taken from a live broadcast of the band on 25 December 1983 in one of their earliest known live performances. Track 17 is rehearsal banter with no actual music. Track 21 is an instrumental cover of "Walter's Lips" by The Lewd, uncredited to that band. Many of the song titles were lost and thus marked with symbols in their place.
Up until 2005 only "Forgotten Principles" had ever seen an official release as one of the singles in Singles 1-12 and Neither Here Nor There though some of the tracks did appear on the Leech and Demos bootleg (The latter maintaining song titles lost with this release.). "Snake Appeal" would be re-recorded for Six Songs and "Set Me Straight" would be re-recorded for Ten Songs and Houdini.
The vinyl version of Mangled Demos From 1983 was released on Alternative Tentacles as a double 10" record. Notably, it features a small booklet hidden amongst the vinyl with liner notes by Buzz Osborne detailing life in Washington around 1983 with almost no details on the actual record or recording itself, done in a similar fashion to the liner notes in 26 Songs and Gluey Porch Treatments. The last two tracks (Both of which being short silent tracks) are omitted from the vinyl release.
