Local Angel is the fourth solo album by desert rock musician Brant Bjork. Compared to previous works it would prove to be his most laid-back and intimate release at the time, focusing on acoustic works and simple melodies. Reception of the album was generally positive though some fans were perplexed.
Local Angel was originally released on 10 August 2004 as the fifth (CD) and sixth (LP) releases on Brant's Duna imprint.
Background[]
Originally work began on Local Angel in 2001 when Brant recorded songs on his four-track in 2001. In 2003 Bjork would work with Dave Catching and Molly McGuire to record a full version of the album in a similar style to Brant Bjork & The Operators. However Brant felt a lot of the intimacy was lost with the re-recordings and eventually opted to record the album in the minimal style similar to the demos in early 2004. The 2003 sessions have never been released.[1] According to a 2004 interview with Stonerrock.com the album itself was almost not released at all due to the album's themes reflecting Bjork's personal inner conflicts and being "insecure" about the material.[2]
Released on Duna Records on CD and LP initially, the original release is long out-of-print. On 2 July 2018 it would be announced that Heavy Psych Sounds would begin a reissue campaign of Brant Bjork's solo albums starting with Tres Dias and Local Angel. Set for a 28 September release, the record would feature new artwork on CD Digipak and Black Vinyl. Limited vinyl variants would include 30 Test Pressings, 600 on Orange/Blue and 250 on Three-Stripe Red/Blue/Orange.[3]
