Live at Giant Rock is the second live album by Yawning Man.
Released in the Fall of 2020, it would be recorded in the Spring of that year at Giant Rock, a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert directly adjacent to Landers, California. The live performance would be done in similar fashion to "Live at Pompeii" by Pink Floyd, without an audience and with several cameras filming. Live at Giant Rock would see release on 30 October 2020 via Heavy Psych Sounds in Italy and via Plastic Cactus Merch in the United States.
Background[]
In the Spring of 2020 Yawning Man were originally intended (Along with Big Scenic Nowhere in what would be their debut performance) to perform at the 2020 edition of Stoned and Dusted. However in April the festival would be canceled due to the CO-VID19 Pandemic. In secret the band would perform at Giant Rock on 18 May 2020 for a livestreamed performance aired on 30 May, recorded with iphones and drone cameras.
Originally, the plan was to record individual songs at the Nude Bowl, a former nudist colony with a pool that is now used by skateboarders in Desert Hot Springs; the Joshua Tree National Park; and Bigfoot Trail in Yucca Valley. Eventually they settled on Giant Rock as it "has a lot of cool history, and it’s a striking and magical place," In an interview with The Desert Sun, bassist/vocalist Mario Lalli stated that it would be dangerous to record at the location as "we were going out to the middle of nowhere" but also notably did it for the fans in response to the festival being canceled. Shooting took place from 5AM - 12PM and the songs were completely improvised, built around ideas from two new songs. Lastly, Lalli also stated in an interview with The Desert Sun that this was an idea he had in the makings for over twenty years, citing "Live at Pompeii" as a major influence.[1]
On 26 July 2020 it would be announced that Live at Giant Rock would see a physical release,[2] with further details revealed in September.[3] It would be released in the following editions:
