Lid was a collaborative side-project featuring Eric Wagner of Trouble and Danny Cavanagh of Anathema, active between 1996 and roughly 1997.

Eric Wagner first met Danny Cavanagh when Trouble supported Anathema on Trouble's (then) last ever tour of Europe. After Wagner left Trouble in April 1996, the band's infamous leader, Eric Wagner, decided that although tired of touring, he was not yet ready to put down his pen. Eric finished writing the majority of his new songs in Summer '96, and was ready to start recording. Enter Danny Cavanagh of Anathema, who Eric knew instinctively would want to record exactly the same record as he had just written. With Danny in place, Eric was then able to bring in brothers Tim and Tommy Reeves who had been introduced to him by a mutual friend. Recording a demo in 1996 the group would sign to Peaceville and The Music Cartel to release Into The Mushroom in 1997.

While the band was happy with the end result and discussed touring at some point, ultimately Wagner chose to bow out of the music business completely until he was invited to do a track for Probot, which sparked his interest in working with bands again and thus rejoining Trouble. Cavanagh would retain his focus on Anathema. The band never performed live.

In an interview with The Obelisk, Wagner explains the short-lived history of Lid:

"Lid was more a project, kind of. Even though I wanted the same thing back then – just to be a band and stuff. The original Lid pooped out on me, so I got other guys. We never played. Ever. We just did that record, and then I ran away from the music business for about five years or whatever it was. Didn’t even pick up a piece of paper and pencil until Dave Grohl called me from Probot. So I blame everything on him again. At first, I didn’t even know if I could do it anymore, write anymore, but then I did it and it was fun, so I called Trouble back up, we all kissed and made up, and got back together for a new record. And that’s been – how long was Lid ago? 14 years? I guess it was time for me to do another one on my own."
