Leagues Beneath is a single released by stoner metal band Sleep. Composed for the Adult Swim Singles series, it was released on 23 May 2018. At sixteen minutes and forty-five seconds, Leagues Beneath is the second-longest song in Sleep's discography, only behind the 63-minute Dopesmoker.
Background[]
On 31 May 2017, adult swim announced their 2017 Singles series, spanning a full year and including Sleep as one of their bands. The band had previously been a part of the series, releasing The Clarity in the Spring of 2014. No details on a single had been mentioned (As was the case with The Sciences and it's surprise release on 20 April 2018) and thus was released in surprise fashion as the 59th single in the series on 23 May 2018, nearly a year after it had begun.
According to an interview with Billy Anderson, Leagues Beneath was written in the same sessions as Dopesmoker but ultimately never recorded nor performed live. It has been recorded in the same sessions as The Sciences and The Clarity in 2014 as indicated in an interview with Matt Pike.
On 9 August 2018, Third Man Records announced that a 12" vinyl edition of the single was now available on black vinyl. an alternate color edition would be made for select events and live shows. Leagues Beneath would also be reissued as part of the 2021 compilation EP Iommic Life.
On 26 August 2023 Third Man Records Detroit would reissue Leagues Beneath as a special "weed edition" on clear vinyl with a weed leaf embedded inside, similar to the infamous "Weedian Hi-Fi" edition of Dopesmoker released a year prior.[1] The release would be playfully re-titled as Leaves Beneath and released in an extremely limited amount.[2]
