Kadavar are a hard/psychedelic rock band based out of Berlin, Germany. Forming in 2010 and steeped in the bluesy, brooding, bottom-heavy traditions of bands like Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Led Zeppelin, Kadavar spin '70s hard rock tropes into a sound drawing from psychedelic, stoner rock and retro rock. The band would be founded by Christoph Lindemann (guitar, vocals), Simon Bouteloup (bass) and Christoph Bartelt (drums), the trio would release their debut album in 2012.

With a new bassist in Simon Bouteloup and a new label in Nuclear Blast, Kadavar would break out in the underground scene with 2013's Abra Kadavar and 2014's Berlin, both of which attaining critical acclaim and charting in Germany. The band would obtain further acclaim in 2017's Rough Times and 2019's For The Dead Travel Fast before establishing their own label in Robotor Records, with distribution via Pelagic Records. With each album Kadavar would become a more frequent touring unit with their high-energy shows.

Kadavar is also known for self-recording their albums with "hard panning" production techniques (guitar tracks on the left channel, bass on the right, drums on the inside right and vocals in the middle) to accurately reproduce the sound of their live performances. Their style has been categorized to have a "riffed psych rock and doom like sound" with influences from Black Sabbath, The Doors, Hawkwind, and Led Zeppelin.

To date Kadavar have released six studio albums among three live albums, a split album and several singles all the while touring all over the world.

History

Formation and Self-Titled Album (2010 - 2013)

Kadavar would be founded in 2010, drummer Bartelt and guitarist Philipp "Mammut" Lippitz began playing together. They became a band when Lindemann joined as bassist and vocalist. Lindemann decided to switch to guitar, allowing Lippitz to switch to bass. Their first recording, an eponymous two-song CD-R, was self-released on 25 August 2011. Early on the band largely played in Germany, often supporting touring acts.

Eventually work would begin on a debut album, recorded and produced by Tiger. Signing with This Charming Man Records, the eponymous Kadavar would see release on 2 March 2012, with an American release via Tee Pee Records circa 10 July 2012. Kadavar would attain praise from several publications and would be awarded "Debut Album of The Year" by The Obelisk.

Kadavar would begin touring more extensively to support their debut album, beginning with a release party at White Trash Fast Food in Berlin on 20 March 2012. Following an appearance at the inaugural DesertFest Berlin and a date supporting Sleep, Kadavar would tour throughout Europe, appearing at festivals such as Duna Jam, Stoned From The Underground, Void Fest and YellowStock while sharing the stage with the likes of La Otracina, Pentagram, Saint Vitus and Electric Wizard among others.

Notably Kadavar would also release a split album with Aqua Nebula Oscillator entitled White Ring in the Fall of 2012, featuring original songs by both bands and two songs with both bands collaborating together. Gaining buzz and momentum, Kadavar would sign a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast Records on 5 February 2013, along with announcing details on their second studio album.

Due to visa problems, a planned U.S. tour could not take place, although the band did appear at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas on 15 March 2013. While in Texas, the band recorded various video clips of themselves which were later used to create the music video for their song "Come Back Life", which was produced by Bartelt.[

Abra Kadavar and Berlin (2013 - 2016)

Kadavar's second studio album Abra Kadavar would see release on 12 April 2013, featuring both original bassist Philipp Lippitz and current bassist Simon Bouteloup, the latter recording on three songs for the album. Notably, Lippitz left the band in what was cited by the band as "personal and musical reasons". He was replaced by Bouteloup, previously of metal band the Oath. After several live performances, Bouteloup was officially announced as a new member in 2013.

Abra Kadavar would attain praise from several publications, with The Obelisk citing the album as "confirmation of their prowess and a signal that there’s more to them than analog worship and thick grooves." and that "Abra Kadavar is still loaded with potential for what this band might be able to accomplish.". Other publications giving significant praise would be Blabbermouth (8/10), Metal Temple (8/10) and scoreless positive reviews from the likes of New Noise Magazine and The Sludgelord. Abra Kadavar would also debut at #42 on the German charts.

Kadavar would begin touring more to support their second album, appearing at Roadburn Festival, Desertfest London, DesertFest Berlin and Heavy Days in Doomtown through a Spring tour of Europe. Following a return to Duna Jam and appearances on the Summer festival circuit including SonicBlast Moledo and Aqua Maria, Kadavar would tour North America for the first time as direct support for Scorpion Child. Finally in 2013, Kadavar would tour Europe through the Fall for two months and culminate for their first ever tour of Australia, alongside Blues Pills.

Further touring to support Abra Kadavar would continue in 2014, returning to North America and sharing the stage with the likes of Mothership, Sons of Huns, Electric Citizen, The Shrine and Wolfmother among appearances at SXSW, Austin Psych Fest and Psycho de Mayo. The band would also perform in Mexico for the first time and return to Germany for an appearance at Freak Valley Festival Notably Wolfmother would visit Kadavar's studio in July 2014 to jam out and record a handful of songs. On 6 June 2014 Kadavar would release their first live album, Live in Antwerp. Kadavar would appear at numerous festivals that Summer before touring with The Picturebooks that Fall.

Kadavar would spend four months working on their third studio album, finalizing the production process of the new album on 1 June 2015 and announcing details on their third record. Berlin would see release by Nuclear Blast on 21 August 2015 and included a cover of Nico's "Reich der Träume" as a bonus track. Notably the album would chart in several countries, notably peaking at #56 on the Austrian Albums Chart, #40 on the Ultratop Wallonia Belgian Charts and #18 on Germany's Offizielle Top 100. Berlin would attain further critical praise for their consistent progression by several publications.

Support for Berlin would begin with Kadavar's first ever South American tour, followed by a string of North American dates with All Them Witches and The Sword and a tour of Europe with Horisont and The Shrine. The next year would see the band touring to Russia, Australia, Europe and Mexico throughout the year.

Rough Times, For The Dead Travel Fast (2017 - 2019)

Development on a fourth studio album would begin in 2016 going into 2017, with details surfacing on the album that July. Following three music videos to promote the album ("Die Baby Die" on 4 August, "Into The Wormhole" on 29 August and "Tribulation Nation" on 29 September), Rough Times would see release on 29 September 2017, peaking at #30 on the German Charts and attaining positive reception.

Notably appearing at festivals such as Red Smoke Festival, HRH Doom vs. Stoner and Wacken Open Air, Kadavar would tour Europe with Death Alley and Mantar to support Rough Times. Kadavar would return to Russia and South America in early 2018 before performing largely at festivals throughout the Summer, along with a gig on 28 June 2018 as direct support for Ozzy Osbourne. Following a tour with Monolord in the Fall, work would begin on the fifth studio album.

A video for "The Devil's Master" would be unveiled on 9 August 2019 as details would surface on the fifth album, followed by a music video for "Demons In My Mind" on 11 October. For The Dead Travel Fast would see release on the same day of 11 October 2019 to positive reviews.

Kadavar would make appearances at Desertfest London and Kristonfest among several festival through Europe that Summer. The band would notably appear at Psycho Las Vegas amid a string of west coast dates in North America leading up to the album's release. Following the release of For The Dead Travel Fast Kadavar would tour Europe and follow with a tour of the Eastern United States alongside Ruby The Hatchet.

Robotor Records and The Isolation Tapes (2020 - Present)

Kadavar would start off 2020 with their first ever tour of Japan, alongside The Obsessed and Church of Misery. The band would me in the midst of a tour of Europe to further support For The Dead Travel Fast when the COVID-19 pandemic would take shape, forcing the band to cancel dates. Along with a portion of their European tour, Kadavar would be forced to cancel planned tours of Australia, New Zealand and North America, along with a curated festival in Re-Generation Fest. The band would release a live album recorded in their studio on Studio Live Session Vol. I on 25 March 2020.

Despite reports stating that the band had re-signed with Nuclear Blast, Kadavar would announce that a new album would be released via their own label Robotor Records, with distribution via Pelagic Records. Initially announced circa July 2020 with a music video for "Eternal Light" following on 13 October, The Isolation Tapes would see release on 23 October 2020 to positive reviews.

On 29 January 2021 Kadavar would announce a split 7" with Lucifer, with Kadavar covering "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)" while Lucifer would cover “Pull Away / So Many Times” by Dust.

On 14 October, Kadavar would announce a collaborative album with Elder entitled Eldovar - A Story of Darkness and Light, written and recorded in the Spring of 2021.

On the 6th of August 2022 the postponed inaugural edition of their own festival, Re-Generation Fest took place.
