Jason... The Dragon is the fourth studio album by the North Carolina sludge metal band Weedeater. Recorded in the Summer of 2010 following setbacks and injuries, it would be released on 1 March 2011 via Southern Lord Records. Notably it would be the last album on the label and the last album to feature original drummer Keith Kirkum, whom would leave the band in the Fall of 2012.
Background[]
Following an extensive touring cycle supporting 2007's God Luck and Good Speed, Weedeater entered the studio for their fourth album with producer Steve Albini in early January 2010 while Arik Roper would be designing the album cover as he did for the band's previous albums.[1] Not long after they entered the studio, Dave "Dixie" Collins accidentally shot himself in the foot, blasting off one of his big toes, whilst he was cleaning his favorite shotgun and was reported to be bedridden for the next few weeks during his recovery. This ultimately led to the band postponing their recording session with Steve Albini until after their tour in March and April.[2]
Despite the setback caused by the accident, the band announced that their next album will be titled Jason...The Dragon and was set for a release later that year, they also announced that their March/April tour will now be called the "Nine Toe" tour in reference to Collins losing his big toe in the accident.[3] The band headlined again in September 2010 after a few other injuries to the band members were reported, in which Keko had torn his meniscus after returning from their previous headlining tour and Dave Shepherd had also broken his pinkie finger while supporting Black Cobra in Europe in July, however, did not prevent the group from returning to Albini to record the album, unlike the previous two accidents.[4] The album would be properly recorded from 15 September to 19 September 2010 at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. All tracks recorded at EA except 6 and 10 recorded at Seagator Recordings and Garage Mahal Studios respectively.
Notably the tracks "Turkey Warlock" and "Long Gone" previously appeared on the Crushers Killers Destroyers II compilation, released in 2004 and featuring Muleboy (Bongzilla) on guest vocals. Both songs would be re-recorded for the album. A two-part music video for "Mancoon" and "Turkey Warlock" produced by Scion A/V would be released to coincide with the album.[5] The album would finally be released on 1 March 2011 on CD and Vinyl, the latter in Black (Unknown Limited Amount) and Green Vinyl (500 copies). In 2015 when Weedeater signed to Season of Mist, all four prior albums would be reissued to coincide with the release of Goliathan, including Jason... The Dragon. The re-issues would be on CD, Cassette and Vinyl.
Jason... The Dragon would attain positive reception upon release by the likes of The Sleeping Shaman,[6] Metal Reviews,[7] The Skinny,[8] We Must Obey[9] and Drowned in Sound.[10] The reissue would lead to more reviews and revisits of the album, for example Metal Temple citing a perfect 10/10 score in a 2015 review.[11]
