In The Lonely Light of Mourning (2022) |
In The Lonely Light of Mourning is the only official solo album by Eric Wagner of Trouble and The Skull. Recorded before his death in August 2021, it would prove to be Wagner's only solo album and ultimately the final recordings he did. Featuring numerous collaborators and friends, it would be released by Cruz Del Sur Music in the Spring of 2022. The cover photo would be taken by Bloodography at Malta Doom Metal Festival.
Background[]
Throughout the 2010s Wagner would release solo CD-Rs under the name Highdeas and had expressed interest in making a solo album and had worked on one for roughly four years.[1] In 2021 he would have enough material to create a solo work outside of the material in past projects such as Trouble, The Skull, Blackfinger and Lid, opting to create something more personal. He would record most of the material with Doug Agee at Alpha Sound Services in Geneva, Illinois while additional recording was handled by Dan Bozek at Aardvark Recording in Steubenville, Ohio. Finally, it would be mastered by John Scrip At Massive Mastering in Schaumburg.
Wagner would recruit several friends and collaborators to contribute to the album, many of whom having played with Wagner in Trouble and The Skull. David Snyder would handle the drums and much of the guitar work, along with Chuck Robinson. Former Trouble bassists Sean Mcallister and Ron Holzner also contributed to the record. Both of Wagner's contributing guitarists to Blackfinger in Matt Cross and Doug Hakes would contribute. Lastly, Lothar Keller (The Skull) Timothy Reeves (Lid) and Victor Griffin (Pentagram, Place of Skulls, Death Row) would all contribute guitar work.
In a press release it would be confirmed the album was finished in July 2021 and submitted to Cruz Del Sur Music, a month before Wagner had died. Wagner himself stated the following of the recordings: 'If this were to be my last one, it's a perfect final chapter to the story.'"[2] On 7 February 2022 a video for the title track would be released, featuring photos of Eric throughout his life.[3]
In The Lonely Light of Mourning would garner positive reception from numerous publications such as Angry Metal Guy (3.5/5),[4] Astral Noize[5] and The Sleeping Shaman[6] among others.
