Idolum is the fourth studio album by the Italian psychedelic band Ufomammut. Recorded in the Fall of 2007, it would be released circa April 2008 via Supernatural Cat. Notably the song "Ammonia" would feature a guest in Rose Kemp, with her vocals recorded at the Junction in Bristol, England. Along with a CD version, Idolum would be released as a special box set edition on vinyl, limited to 500 copies and featuring an exclusive bonus track. The name "idolum" is a Latin term referring to the dual concepts of "ghost" and "idea".
Idolum would attain praise from various critics. Adam Stone, writing for The Sleeping Shaman, would praise the album by stating "This is a long (sixty-six minutes) album of the type of weird industrial/progressive psychedelic metal sludge that Ufomammut have made their own. It’s not as immediately accessible as their previous album, ‘Lucifer Songs’, but is a darker and more gruelling and monotonous voyage, and you may find it, as I did, a deeply rewarding experience when played over and over again at a volume loud enough to alert the local council.".[1] Jeremy Ulrey, writing for Chronicles of Chaos and awarding a 9/10, especially praising album opener "Stigma" and describing "Stardog" as "mining the entrenched groove for all it's worth, at times coming off like a drunken Ministry if Al Jourgensen forgot to turn on the drum machine.".[2] Lastly, Mark Hensch, writing for Thrash Pit and awarding a perfect 10/10 score, praising the album's universal appeal, surprising catchiness and wicked originality.[3]
