Hypnos 69 was a space rock/psychedelic rock quartet based out of Belgium. Forming in 1994, this band would draw heavily from 1960s and 1970s psychedelic and space rock. In a career spanning nearly twenty years the band would release five studio albums all the while performing all over Europe as a marquee act.

The name was taken from the ancient Greek god of Sleep and Subconsciousness. The number 69 stands for equilibrium and stability; properties that can be retrieved in the marked sound of the band.

History[]

Hypnos 69 was founded in 1994, Diest, Belgium. When Steve and Dave Houtmeyers decide in the summer of '94 to found a band with Tom Vanlaer. The Houtmeyers had actually played in grindcore and death metal bands prior to forming Hypnos 69. Some years after forming the band would sign with the Belgian label RocknRollRadio to release their first EP Wherever Time Has Shared It's Trust in 2000. Two years would pass and the band would follow with their debut album Timeline Traveller, which garnered further buzz.

The band would begin performing outside of Belgium, sharing the stage with the likes of Colour Haze and Los Natas among others while attaining a fourth musician in Steven Marx, who had previously been a guest for the band. This solidified lineup would work on and release Promise of a New Moon. Signing to German label Elektrohasch Schallplatten, a third album would quickly follow in The Intrigue of Perception, released in October 2004.

Hypnos 69 would play numerous gigs in their native Belgium among marquee festivals such as Roadburn Festival, Swamp Room Mania, Psychedelic Avengers, Stoned From The Underground and Sauzpif Rocks among tours and sharing the stage with touring bands. The band would also notably perform their tenth anniversary gig on 8 May 2004.[1]

The Eclectic Measure would see release in the Fall of 2006 and would take a much darker tone as compared to previous efforts. The band was briefly disbanded following it's release but would reform to record a fifth album in Legacy, which was released in 2010. The band's final shows would be a short tour in 2011[2] and a string of shows the next year,[3] sharing the stage with the likes of Glowsun, Sungrazer and Lonely Kamel. Hypnos 69 would ultimately disband in 2012.
